By not knowing myself, can anyone tell me why over the past week or so some services have been without a buffet car or wifi?

From GC Website:
Please note the following services will have no buffet car or wifi on board.
08:04 London Kings Cross - Sunderland
12.30 Sunderland - London Kings Cross
Grand Central apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.

Presumably the buffet car houses the wifi transmitter, I'd guess there is some sort of fault with the coach so it has been shunted out of the formation.

One of the buffets was at Heaton yesterday, probably the one that is missing?

With the third rake away at Kilmarnock for upgrade, it means there's no spare if one is defective and can't be turned around in a night shift.

On this occasion I believe it's down to wheel flats / cavities, and, yes, the Wi-Fi server is in the TRSB, so both sustenance and brain food (?!??!??!) disappear at once.

Doesn't the vehicle also house the guard's area? Is he travelling retro style in the compartment in the power car?

There is no guard's compartment in the GC power cars. All but one had been removed by the time GC acquired these PCs. These six power cars had all previously been fitted with TDM equipment to operate with Class 91 locos and Mk IV coaches prior to the DVTs coming on stream. Whilst this may not have been the reason that the guard's accommodation was removed (before my time), it did occupy a similar space towards the rear of the van.

It's an interesting point though.... must be tricky for the Guard without the TRSB in the formation, though I don't think that the 180s have a Guard's office either, do they?

As often as not , the guards office seems to be a set of 4 seats around a spare table somewhere when I travel GC!

Still love em though :)

Yeh, the guards and crew are normally to be found in the buffet! However, bit of a problem there are the PA announcements will have to be made from the van in the power cars.

Back cab of 180s not normally used by the guard, tends to be a single seat table in first class
