There are still a lot of people who still think that the railways are run by BR...

If you'd had my journey from Sussex to Manchester on friday you'd understand why:
Southern, given up any resemblance of a public service after a fatality at Wandsworth 5 hours earlier! Struggled to reach Euston 60 miles away after 3 hours to find that the WCML had similarly collapsed after overhead line problems (again) at Watford. Arrival in to Manchester 2 1/2 hours late by the timetable.
Fortunately the whole service was closed today due to rebuilding the wcml 3 months after the £9 billion rebuilding and Id had the sense to give my money to British Airways who got me to Gatwick 15 mins early.

Were there problems on the Durham Coast today? An HST set passed me at Tursdale at around 15:30 which begs the question, what service was it?

Who was working the 1230 ex Sunderland yesterday? I know it was a HST and not one of the 180s.

Fitment of new MTU engines in each of the six class 43 power cars. This opportunity is only available for a short period as the MTU engines which are available to Grand Central must be fitted and “in traffic” by 31 December 2010, to ensure compliance with European legislation (European Non-Road Machinery Diesel Exhaust Directive 2004/26/EC Stage IIIB). This will bring them into line with the majority of the national fleet of this rolling stock type. If this work is not done the Grand Central fleet would be the only units with their original engines. Grand Central need to secure a long enough track access contract for its investors to see a return on that investment to bring the Grand Central HSTs into line with other operators of this rollingstock on the Greater Western, ECML and Cross Country franchises (See Appendix 1for details)

:( Such is progress

I hope GC don't get a long enough extension until it's too late to have them fitted by the deadline then!;)

HST investment
Grand Central and the finance provider will be able to justify the investment of re-engining the 6 HST Power Cars with MTU engines, together with some further improvements of the TrailerVehicles (Details in Appendix 1).
Passenger Benefits
• Higher MPC figures for HSTs mean less delay for Grand Central passengers and those of other TOCs. More than two thirds of intrinsic Grand Centralgenerated delays have been caused by fleet related issues. The experience of other TOCs that have undertakensimilar work, including fitting MTU engines, is that fleet MPC figures have doubled.
• Lower fuel, noise, and other emissions lead to “greener” journeys.
• Lower emissions will substantially enhance the environment at Sunderland Station, specifically due to it being underground.
• Trailer Car refurbishment improves the mechanical and electrical resiliance of the vehicles, as well as improving the passenger environment.
Other Benefits
• New Engines are more fuel efficient. Grand Centralanticipate a 15% reduction in fuel usage after the investment.
• Re-engined HST’s are noticeably quieter, with benefits for noise on stations, andalongside tracks.
• Easier spares procurement will result as the fleet will be more comparable with other operators’ rolling stock and have better access to industry spares pools.
• The resultant HST power cars will be comparable (in engineering terms) to other HSTpower cars used on the network, giving the opportunity for future greater flexibility of industry rolling stock utilisation. Furthermore, themaintenance of HSTs should be less problematic given the eventual increase in commonality.
• Grand Central assess the impact on other operators as purely positive, as vehicle failuresreduce and less delay minutes are imparted upon other users of the network.

In response to that, the downsides are?

That's quite saddening, I best go Valenta hunting before it's too late

I've seen, and heard 43065 and 43084 but I'd like to see/hear the other four. What are the chances of seeing all the power cars in a day? I'd also really like to see 43080 and 43068 together, they've both got great soundtracks.

So, better, greener, newer, more reliable, quieter and fewer delays. But no loud noises to keep enthusiasts happy. I think it's a positive move, but I expect many on here to disagree!

PS: Interesting this comes in the same week as the rumours about Chiltern maybe using some DMUs on their WMSR "sister" company. Will the enthusiasm for these open access companies now wane if they are to use "normal" trains in future? ;)

well...

you could see two sets with 4 power cars on workings and see the other two not in use at heaton depot?

That's exactly what I was thinking, I'm going to York in a few weeks and the initial plan was to catch the n'bnd GC service to Northallerton and hopefully catch the s'bnd one back - but both services 'meet in the middle' between Thirsk and Northallerton which is a bit of a bummer given I wanted to eat on the train, for which there probably wouldn't be enough time for from York - Thirsk - plus I wanted 'Northallerton' on my ticket :(

I guess I could go twice though :)

I don't think the enthusiasm would wane to be honest, I admire GC as a company, the trains are just a bonus. People (I assume) don't choose their operator by the stock they use, if they did then Northern would have gone out of business :p

Plus, 'normal' trains? Have you seen GC's 180s?

No, as 080 is at Brush

To lose its valenta? Doubt it, as the MTUs in FGW,NXEC & XC dont meet current emision standards I dont think, and they are no longer in production

Does anyone know what Ian Yeowart's current venture is? I've heard it's some sort of "consultancy" job.

Following on from that why did he leave GC/GN/GU?
