Wasnt teh 4th grand central service that got the go ahead something like 09:18 off sunderland and 16:50 from kings cross?

I think it's somewhere in the region of 12:30 into KGX on the 09:18, and 23:00 into Sun on the 19:18... Not completely sure!! Base the journey on 3 and a half to 3 and three quarter hours...

I don't think the 0918 will be useful from York (1045ish at York?) - it gets in too late for a day trip. The 0822 is useful but is slow compared to NXEC, it can be 25 late and get to King's cross on time! It's much better at weekends though, 0845 is an ideal time on a Saturday and 1918 is perfect to return (providing it's not a Adelante!)

Underfloor vibrations and I severely doubt they're as comfortable as a Mk3 inside.

But compared to a HST, they're terrible.

However, I'll conceed they are great in comparison to the 220s/221s and (as much as people will hate me for saying it) the 222s.

Can't speak for anyone else, but when I arrive into Paddington on a HST I feel like I've travelled on a proper train. When I arrive there on anything else, it just feels bizarre. And not just because I love the HSTs, anything else on an inter-city journey just doesn't feel right, as if you've just stepped off a commuter train. If that makes sense.

Same for me yesterday on a Swindon to Bath move, it was nice to get on the HST and have a relaxing journey. Can't do that on a DEMU...

Stil looking forward to the day I arrive into Kings Cross on a GC HST, that truely will both send me down Memory Lane and be awesome.

Whats wrong with it being a 180?

I would imagine yorkie was thinking about how jammed solid a 180 could be on those services. As they are well suited to the leisure travellers and should avoid that peak-time fare, it could be very well loaded and leave passengers standing all the way to York.

Whilst on the subject of 180s, I would hope they are to be refurbished before entering service with GC/GU. Is this to be the case?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but due to Grand Central's amount of tables, some of the standard coaches only have 64 seats?

Yes I meant non stop York-London, bit annoying if you're running on time yet there is a late running stopper in front

62 seats if there's a wheelchair space in Standard!

Yeah, but the "competition" for Grand Central will be HSTs/ 225s, so these are a much more meaningful comparison - passengers may prefer a 180 over a Voyager, but there's no journeys where they'd have the choice, whereas London to York obviously has the NXEC 125/225s

I have always found it to be a case of ask before you board mate, sometimes I have been allowed and sometimes note. Strictly speaking, the answer should be no as the terms and conditions state that it isn't valid on GC but it just seems to depend.

Just come into Sunderland on the 16:50 ex KGX. 180 005 was in the other platform at Sunderland on a crew training run. HST departed northbound and the 180 southbound simultaneously. I should think the 180 has just passed Hartlepool by the time I post this - just in case anyone wanted to see it heading south.
