Is that Polaris idea ever going to kick off or was that just hot air?

I think GC are probably concentrating on meeting the day to day rolling stock needs rather than buying in new stock which will take months to years to get into service. They've probably shelved the Polaris idea for the foreseeable future. They can't commit to ordering new rolling stock whilst their troubles continue due to financial uncertainties. Whilst they say their finances are okay, there is of course only so long that they can operate a service in the state currently.

Looks like tonight's 1820 KGX-SUN effectively acted as the 1830 off KGX as far as York!

The 1830, 1900 and various others were cancelled.

And natex still stopped GC pax from joining their services whilst we welcomed nxec pax on board to try and get them home, from what Ive heard(and not just from GC staff)was that nxec were saying was basically "go home and try again tomorrow" !!!

After the well publicised rolling stock problems I was a little surprised to see 2 GC HSTs sat one behind the other waiting to get into York on the down main yesterday (24/06). I also saw another GC HST heading southbound between Darlington and Northallerton (I didn't think this was their normal route) later in the day. Does this mean things are picking up for GC?

As far as I know there has been some testing going on to see if the HSTs are working properly now, providing they are I guess we could have full service back soon :D

They were..the 1650 ex Kings Cross passed me at Huntingdon billowing smoke from one power car..as I left Huntingdon,it was stood just north of the station not moving very much..the signalman told me they thought it had failed, and it certainly looked that way, although it did limp off a few minutes later northbound as I waited for NR to remove half a tree off the down slow in front of me!!

43123 does "clag" a bit but I've been with that set all week and there has been no problems at all so why the signalman is telling you that they thought it had failed I dont know !! :-?:-?

Almost spat my coffee out on reading this in The Times today:

Times Online said:
Happy anniversary

Today is the seventieth anniversary of the world speed record for a steam locomotive, set by LNER's Mallard loco down the East Coast Line between London and York. One of the operators on the line today, the excellent Grand Central, is marking the event with special catering, featuring duck à l'orange. Entirely appropriate; however, it says a lot about the state of our modernised railway that no train on the line will ever emulate the Mallard's record-breaking 126mph run. The speed limit today is 125mph.

Source http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/columnists/article4258319.ece

I hope this isn't a sarcastic in-joke by the writer, because I think putting aside PC issues which are - arguably - out of their control, what they have done has been impressive in the circumstances and they have shown a lot of guts to be where they are today. They are still here and deserve much credit for that and for the service they provide on board (when the trains decide to run), talking from experience and what I have heard from this board and others. It is nice to see some positive press for a change...

Despite the factual inaccuracy in the penultimate sentence, obviously!!

On another note, nice for GC to be marking the anniversary...

Yes, it IS ironic. GC have achieved something which is almost impossible (well, when it all runs as it should, anyway), but by concentrating traction and infrastructure developments over the past century on safety and very little on high speed infrastructure, has made only marginal improvements in speed.
The Mallard record a hundred years ago was, of course, just a one-off. The regular high speed services on the ECML began in 1935 with the once-a-day service KingsX - Newcastle in exactly 4 hours.
But seventy three years later, GC can still only shave 15mins off that time from KingsX - Sunderland. All the "improvements" from electronic signalling, dual turbo-diesel engines, welded track, streamlined aluminium bodies and more, and we get just 6% off the journey time.
(Okay, most of the slow movement is on the East Durham coast, but you can see what I mean).

I really hope that GC can weather the PC problems and can demonstrate that even market forces (their passengers!) demand better that the current offering from UK railways.

Trains do exceed 125 for testing purposes.

The difference is that they cannot convey passengers.

So if the article wants to be factually correct, rather than sensational, they should admit that such runs do take place, and if they wish they can moan that passengers aren't allowed on them if they want.

Peterborough-Grantham is perfectly fine for 140, it's just that the HSE is so fussy that they won't allow it. It would be far, far safer to be in a 91 doing 140 on that section than be in a car on the adjacent A1 doing 60mph.

I thought NXEC 225's could under flashing greens, on certain sections of track.

No..the limit is 125mph..the flashing greens are simply used now as a fifth aspect, although they were introduced for that purpose. Our 365's are capable of 110 mph operation, but not allowed to as there is no section between the cab and passenger compartments like a 317 has

National Rail Enquiries seems to think a full service is timetabled today, although there is no report for the 1605 arrival from SUN (rather than YRK) at KGX. What's the story here? Has there been a failed attempt at a full service today?

I was at Sunderland at lunchtime hoping to see the 12:30 depart and curious about what was working it. It was delayed until 13:20 with the platform announcement citing 'technical problems with the train'. The HST set came in from the Newcastle direction but with standard class at the London end so not sure if it had come in from Heaton or the inbound working had been diverted via Durham. 0123 was leading with 065 on the rear. There certainly seems to be an attempt to run a full service but I hope its too early to say it was a failed attempt.

Interestingly, I counted around 30 pax waiting for it which, given the recent problems suggests people are still willing to give it a go. I also heard some favourable comments at a meeting last week about the fact that GC were the only operator on the ECML throughout June to attempt to maintain a 7 day railway by operating over the Joint Line rather than resort to bustitution. Hope they get due credit for it.

Left the Cross on time by the look of it - I haven't access to any more sophisticated system than National Rail Enquiries' tracker so have no idea whether the afternoon run to London worked as normal or not...

Perhaps a more fair comparison would be with one of the several NXEC services that run Kings Cross to Newcastle in under 3 hours rather than with a service that takes a comparatively slow line to a different destination north of York?

ECS off the 16:50 just passed through Seaburn @ 20:42 so i assume it had a good run. Was a different set to the 12:30 with 068 on the rear, didn't see what was on the front.

GC HSTs as well as HT Pioneers have been trundling through Royston (therefore also Cambridge, Ely, March) today, good for them doing that rather than going for bus replacements like NXEC. Both Down trains I saw looked well packed... Unfortunately no photos, may try next weekend if they're still on diversions...

Didnt even realise they were diverting this way so was a nice surprise, but would have had my camera ready otherwise! How many weekends is this happening?

They moan about the idea of trains doing their top speeds such as 140 but why bother setting the requirements in the first place and let's be honest what is the worst that gonna happen at top speed if it crashes past 100mph the effects are pretty bad anyway it actually doesnt make any difference.

As I was on several of the trains this weekend Route Conducting between Hitchin and Peterborough, I can safely say the ones I was on were packed! We did manage to find most people a seat!

The website just refers you to a phone number that just rings unanswered!
Have they ceased trading?

Looks like full service! 1A60 and 1N25 have both run so far. A60 is around Finsbury Park with N25 passing Doncaster.
