Had a very interesting run on the 1730, which had a green signal for the Coast at 1818 but this was reset as a farce ensued. I think I know what the cause of the farce was but I am not going to post it here (sorry!) Anyway after some faffing about we eventually departed around 1830 - 1 hour late - via Heworth. Lots of Metro pax looked a bit perplexed to see the train instead of a plastic thing. There was some decent thrash through Pelaw for quite a crowd there which was nice!

As we were passing through Gateshead we could see a Class 47 hauled charter over the river in Newcastle.

At King Edward Bridge South Jn we crossed onto the Down main, ran wrong line to Low Fell Jn and then went along the bi directional slow line at Tyne Yard, while we traversing this line at approx 20mph, we had the incredible scene of a Class 47 hauled train overtaking another Class 47 hauled train on the ECML in 2008 - who'd have thought it?

Several bashers were really enjoying the spectacle and showed this by flailing at us. Dreadful!!

More rare track was had when we crossed over to the Up Slow Leamside from Tursdeale Jn to Ferryhill South Jn, a HST overtook us at high speed while we trundled along the jointed track.

At Darlo, the railtour had been held for the HST, and as we approached we started to draw alongside. But alas, the tour was put ahead of us (as expected) and we didn't see it again.

But, what a trip!! Just a shame there were only 4 bashers on it to enjoy it!

I know the Lincoln line crosses the ECML there.

What lincoln line? Where is "there"? I think you are confused!

The joint line does not cross the ECML anywhere, it joins back up with it at Loversall Carr Jn, where there is a flyover which can be taken by Up or Down trains but more commonly in the Down direction, so I suppose it does 'cross' the ECML if that counts.

Saw the set arrive at KGX this afternoon while waiting for a Cambridge train, which made up for an unpleasant half hour on the Piccadilly Line! Anyone know why:

1. Both PCs 123 and 065 have a plastic pipe hanging down out of their grilles, connected to a small yellow tap just inside? Seemed non standard to say the least! Some sort of stop-gap reliability measure?

2. Standard coach B was replaced by an extra first class coach F?? Do standard pax have to pay extra to use it?!

The pipe and yellow tap are I believe a modification made long before GC was around to aid the topping up of engine coolant. Im sure Ive read about it somewhere, probably in a mag. It may even have been a GNER mod as Im sure they were having one or two problems with overheating when they added the 9th coach, though Im sure someone will correct me!
You can declassify FC coaches if needs be!

Ok cheers Sir_Clag, never noticed this before on either GC or ex-GNER PCs... pretty subtle of course, so easy to miss even if they've been around a while...

Thought GNER had only had one of the GC PCs though... pretty sure 123 was Virgin XC, not sure about 065. Was the mod done fleet-wide?

I think the mod must have been done fleet wide. The GC sextet must have gone off-lease by the time they had solved the problem, and so removed the taps. If you look closely at the grilles on NXEC ones you can still see the gap where it was.

Just watched the ECS off the 16:50 pass through Seaburn @ 20:42. 123 on the back, didn't see what was on the front, presumably 065 if it was at Kings Cross earlier. Would like to think these two are now sorted. Hope they are ok for next Tuesday!

Heard rumours of at least one of 067/068 coming out of Brush in last few days, can anyone give the status of these two, and 080/084 for that matter?

To help with the coolant tap issue, HST power cars were suffering from lack of coolant at times, this was before the introduction of 225s. 8 ECML HST PCs were converted to a DVT, The introduction of the 225s saw the ECML lose a significant portion of its HSTs to other areas, all 8 buffer fitted HSTs were transfered to Crosscountry with 3 sets transfered to the WCML for Holyhead trains. Great Western Sets were not fitted with them, to my knowledge, but their engines were derated to ease the problem.

43068 and another one were on a rake of 2xTRFB, 2xTS and 2xTF at Heaton earlier and the coaches that went to Craigentinny for tyre turning arrived back at HT this evening courtesy of a silver duff.

Not directly connected but interesting, Heaton are to receive their first rail delivery in a good while of diesel oil in the next few hours.

HST was out today just ran very very late this morning thats all and has been confirmed as travelling via spalding this evening !!:grin:
