The Wirral line between James' Street & Hamilton Square involves the steepest gradient on the national network. It's 1:27 on one of the legs, (not sure which one).
I recall having a cab ride from Rock Ferry around the loop not long after it opened, (in a 503 too), and the bit under the Mersey is like a big dipper!

Leeds Street bank (the bit where the lines comes in/out of tunnels between Moorfields and Sandhills) has a gradient of 1 in 30 or 1 in 25.
But whatever it is, I hear the gradient is too steep for trains to start from the signal that is located on there heading north out of the tunnel. Ever wondered why 507s and 508s always get a green signal heading out of Moorfields and attack the bank at full throttle?
