I don't understand what you mean by "the opposite end of the station". There are six places you can be caught by ticket inspections at Preston:
- on the overbridge to Platforms 1-2 (semi permanent)
- on the platform
- in the subway
- at the exit opposite the Fishergate centre
- outside the main entrance/ticket office (all occasional)
- at the car park exit on platform 7 (rare)

Wouldn't have been the footbridge, there's no access from the Up WCML into 1 and 2.

From what I can infer, the OP left the train from Cark on either platforms 4 or 6 - most likely 4, then attempted to go to the ticket office but Virgin had a block on in front of the arches into the ticket office.

There is access to P2, I used to regularly catch the morning Manchester train from Barrow that joins a Blackpool service there. I think it uses P4 now, but most trains come into P6 if going on to Manchester or P5 if terminating.

Out of curiosity, what if the ticket office is right by the exit of the station?? (I am not sure if this is the case at Preston).

If you look at the NR map you can see that the booking office is at the main entrance (above platform level). If there are RPIs in that area they will normally be on the overbridges so you will encounter them first. Many people arriving on P5/6 will go to the bridge and use the exit to the right instead (i.e. at the top of the map), so there are sometimes RPIs at that end of the bridge.

thanks for the advice, do you think this is an appropriate explanation?

The journey i travelled on the 4th of November 2011 was Cark to Preston.
<snip>

starrrdoll. You are right to compose a letter which shows that there was no opportunity to pay at Cark and none on board the train, and also quite right to offer to make that payment immediately.

However, there are some phrases in your draft which do not help in this situation and, as Old Timer has kindly pointed out, I would be happy to assist you if you forwarded a draft letter by sending a Private Message (PM). Yorkie has already identified the hint of self-incrimination in your use of "usually".

It would be very helpful to know a little more about the letter you received, particularly, who it is from, exactly what that letter is claiming from you, and alternatives to that claim which are mentioned in the letter and any Law which is quoted. Please could you include these in your message?

From what you have posted on here, I don't have the impression that this will be a difficult matter to resolve, but I would like to have the facts clear before confirming any letter. Thanks.

i don't know why he didnt just let me buy one, he just said i'd be charged for the ticket through a letter.

also ive already noted the train guards wait on the platform so i wasnt able to make my way across to the ticket booth.

The guards stand on the platform in order to open and close the doors safely. Not to collect revenue.

For discussion on Guard / Train Manager / Conductor terminology see: http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=57595

Sorry if this sounds like a daft question, but I am assuming here that you did actually have the means to pay your fare? Scanning the post's it isn't made obvious.
