Gorden Kaye dies

Actor Gorden Kaye, who was best known for his role in the long-running BBC sitcom 'Allo 'Allo!, has died aged 75.

The star's former agency confirmed to BBC News he died at a care home on Monday morning.

Kaye played cafe owner Rene Artois on the hit show, which centred on the fictional exploits of resistance fighters in World War Two in German-occupied France.

He appeared in all 84 episodes of the sitcom, as well as a stage version.

His last screen role was in a one-off return of 'Allo 'Allo in 2007, which reunited several members of the cast.

He also starred in BBC sketch show Revolver in 2004.

Anyway, Allo Allo was ridiculous, but at times very very funny. Rest in peace Gordon.

I was shocked to hear this news, if only because I thought he'd died years ago...

Nevertheless, it's sad to lose someone so familiar to so many, although time hasn't been kind to show in which he made his name. A fellow HD native too, from the Holmfirth area.

Hit by a flying advertising hoarding, iirc. I think he was in his car: if not, it probably would have killed him. I think it virtually put an end to his career though.

In the early 2000s, I used to see him regularly, ironically in a café-bar at the National Museum of Film, Photography and Television, sitting alone with a coffee, waiting for the cinema doors to be opened.

I remember visiting there when I was at Uni in Bradford. Lots of fun. I used to enjoy Allo Allo when I was young, it hasn't aged terribly well though.

The way 'Allo 'Allo used the whole language barrier thing was fantastic.

Speaking of which, Arthur Bostrom (who played Officer Crabtree) has said that he was 'groatly saddened to here of Gorden Kaye's pi**ing.'

Sad news. I don't think that his career was ended by his accident, though it was very serious. I think he just got typecast.
