Just been looking at google maps in advance of a planned trip to visit friends in Portsmouth, and noticed that gmaps seems to have renamed Portsmouth Harbour station to 'Portsmouth Portsea Landing'. Quick google of this name suggests that there is something with a code POMOPLD corresponding to this name, but I thought station codes always had 3 letters ie PMH...

Not hugely important, but I found it weird enough to be curious. Can anyone shed any light on why this is?

It's most likely just a misplaced label that should be somewhere else in the harbour; Google Maps are full of such things.

It comes back to Portsmouth Harbour in RTT - so perhaps some other code?

POMOPLD is a TIPLOC code, but whether it's still in use or not (Ore CEGB certainly isn't, for example), I have no idea.

TIPLOC codes are used by planners (or they could've been superseded by a model railway and a stopwatch for all I know) to assist in timing trains.

It isn't just a misplaced label on the map because Google Now seems to show trains to / from Portsmouth Harbour as being to / from Portsmouth Portsea Landing aswell.

Portsea Landing is actually just the pontoon structure that is used by the Gosport ferry, Portsea is the area of Portsmouth in which Portsmouth Harbour station is located.

OK that's new to me - I hadn't heard of TIPLOC codes before (although I can't seem to find any detailed info about them!). Are these codes allocated to locations other than stations (eg junctions in between) - ie everything that appears on RTT, for example?

EDIT - Seems like Bing maps are also a bit confused - this shows both names, each with a different icon... http://binged.it/1oLk9GJ
