Good things on the Network

Hey y'all

I dont know how far this thread will go, but it hoping it will just being a bit of happiness to everyone because theres too much negativity in the world.

I just want to discuss the things that people like the most. It can be anything to do with our network, past or present, as long as its not negative.




So I would like to start with the HST. As old as it is, stick it in a decent livery, and it like soo modern, and i dont think anything will ever beable to replace it

lmao. That reminds me, Decent train conductors. Some of them, like they'll have hundreds of ticktes to check, and u could be having the worst day of your life, and in the fews seconds you see the conductor while they check your ticket, they always manage to put a smile on your face.

Much as I have maligned it in other posts, a huge amount of investment is going into modernising and improving the railway currently and that has got to be the best thing for me. Talk of HS2, electrification schemes etc is very good news for a population of users who have for too long been badly neglected.

Yeah, thats another good thing, Improvements to the network. Hopefully, It will lead to an even better service that will meet the needs of many. Theres so many Improvements that im looking forward to.

In my opinion these are some of the positive things about British Railways today:

(1) Tornado. Highlight of the year. Seeing a new build steam locomotive running on the mainline is refreshing and just marvellous too see.

(2) Investment in heritage railways including various expansion schemes, loco overhauls, line extensions - including mainline links. Always a good thing imo.

(3) The emergence and prevelance of new opening access with interesting loco hauled rolling stock such as Wrexham snd Shropshire.

(4) The success and continuation of mainline steam and diesel railtours.

(5) Improvements and upgrades to the network and the opening of new stations and railfreight terminals. More needs to be done to increase railfreight on our railways.

Pre privatisation BR: CIGs for their elegance, and fast bumpy rides!

Privatisation era: Lots of new, different looking trains

Future: HS2, and hopefully LM losing its franchise!

• Pendolinos and VHF. It got off to a bad start, granted, and this is a controversial choice, but the new timetable means that there is a better service to London for so many cities, especially Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool. From Glasgow, cutting 45 minutes off the London journey time is a big improvement IMO and it means that finally rail can compete with the plane up here.
• HSTs still have a place on thee chances of network, and they're still doing a good job. Whilst the chances of Valenta are shrinking, I thank the MTUs for keeping the HSTs in service.
• So many scenic lines, such as Kyle, West Highland, S&C etc are still open for passenger use and saved from Beeching's axe.
• So many closed lines are now being reopened, others have a campaign underway. Great to see that people now want a railway line!
• The network is a great mix of the old and the new; for example we have Turbostars running under semaphores and the like. I like how a lot of the old things about the network have been retained whilst bringing it all up to modern standards.

Victorian stations. St Pancras, York, Newcastle, Temple Meads, Kings Cross etc etc . Built over 100 years ago but with a little bit of TLC still capable of doing the job in the 21st century. The Victorians believed in building Cathedrals and they also believed in building them big so as traffic grows the stations can handle it with minor adjustments. Compare this to the parsimonious stations built in the 60's and 70's. New st, Euston, Stafford, Peterborough, Luton and many more. Built with pessimism in mind, utilitarian and without joy or soul. They are almost universally unfit for purpose now and are being flattened and rebuilt. It shows one inescapable fact. The railways are more than just a method of transport. They are a public's identity and a means to lift the spirits. Rushing through kent at 186mph is good for the soul and makes the world a better place. The Victorians realised that the railways symbolised something more important than a means of getting from A to B. I hope we dont forget this as we rebuild the network and plan for HS 2-6. The French certainly havent !!

The best aspects of the network for me are.
1.The high amount of investment being put into it.
2.All the new builds of unit etc coming soon.
3.The current efforts by most Preserved lines to expand.
4.The flexibility of network rail to allow all the various railtours and associated L/E moves and even convoys for galas.
5.the fact we still have HST's.
6.The fact we still use electric locomotives albeit to a small extent.
