Good Things About Voyagers

I quite like Class 390s
When travelling First Class the layout and seats are fairly similar to the Mark 3 coaches that they replaced
The only downside is the service area, that can block the view in some seats
On longer journeys the whine from the exterior can eventually be heard, not sure if it is the traction motors blowers or the traction motors themselves
Due to the length of the train, it can be quiet a walk from Coack K or L to the shop!
I've only made one trip by Class 220/221, by accident

On the plus side the windows and views are better than the 390
There was no at-seat service and I had to make my way to the shop as soon as the train left Crewe to get my one and only set of freebies
I've also made two trips by Class 222, although this was standard seating

Seats seem to be of a better quality than those on VT, also they are all one colour, unlike VT
Sadly on my second journey it was a four car set and was wedged
I managed to find a seat that had been used for luggage, so quickly threw that out of the way!

They get you from A-B and have a number of engines meaning that a complete failure of the train on CrossCountry is unlikely.
Like all trains, they are great when they are not too crowded but stick too many passengers on and it gets uncomfortable.

Because 222 is a bigger number than 220 or 221, and they have more carriages (well some of them do) so they are more grown up coz they are bigger.

I've only used them on long Cross Country services (Bournemouth- Edinburgh, Cornwall-Glasgow), and never used the trains they had before. Also not used them for a few years now.
But they seemed OK- at the ends of the journey, anyway, where they were quiet. No train is ever going to be pleasent being used for what it isn't designed for, and with all the stops through the Midlands, they are used for a lot of short journeys on busy lines, leading to overcrowding and delays whilst people get on and off.

The only good thing about Voyager are there horns.

I think the main reason people don't like them, is because they replaced the locos they loved, 37s, 47s, 86s, 87s, 90s and HSTs

Having worked on the railway in the 1990s, almost every train has suffered any and all of that, even the Class 90s and 91s
I had a short stint at ICEC and drivers started referring to me as "The Jinx" as almost every train I worked on would fail, run late, have some form of technical fault, or some other problem
I can only remember working a handful of trains that were actually "on time", although a few did arrive early, but usually due to a diversion that had been cancelled and so we were able to use the normal route
I took day trip to London a few years ago, on a very tight schedule, with just 30 minutes to get from Euston to Kings Cross, and all those services ran on time, from Glasgow to Euston, Kings Cross back to Glasgow with the same set back to Kings Cross, and finally Euston back to Glasgow again
On balance, every Class 390 I have been on, so far, has been "on time", certainly nothing more than 15 minutes late
On the Pendos, I like the tilt and the seats are confy IMO. A very nice atmosphere inside, especially in the vestibule areas. The shop is a very good idea and there's lots of room to move about and browse. They are also quiet (except for the bloody vibration from the window shades). I really do like the Pendolinos TBH. The reservation system's well placed, but sadly it's out of use IIRC :roll:
On Voyagers, you don't get the smell in Coach D and the seats are comfy as well. Nice big windows and a generally nice environment.

Can't ignore that Pendos are possibly the safest trains on our rails, sadly tried and tested at Grayrigg

Voyagers were supposed to be the hieght of modern technology. Ok, they're new and give branson credit where its due - he put the money into a project which should have happened on the late 70s (APT anyone?) but was withdrawn due to problems and lack of funding. Good points - yes, they are new, clean fast and full of modern technology. Anybody ever tride using one on a hot day with the aircon packed up or on a long distance journey that should have been 8 or 10 car double set but only one set has been provided? Also, does anyone realise that even with an 8 car voyager, it is still less seating than the 7 car HSTs that they were supposed to replace? And do they need to have the seats so close together? And of course, there is so much room in side for all your luggage that you could swing a cat:roll: ONe other good thing to come out of the voyagers was the electronic reservation system. Hmm..... Nice idea, you can't argue with a display in the wrong place - as long as it works at the time!!!! As far as modern day traction is concerned I do feel that the Electric Desiros are probably about the best at the moment, you can even still get window seats that you can actually see out of and the environment seems so much better!

One thing I hate about Voyagers is the stupid reservation systems which take ages to scroll across causing delays in the carriages.
Yes, and they're placed stupidly as well. OK, the paper tickets look a little untidy (I've seen them used on a Voyager once when the electric system failed) but they're far superior to the scrolling thing, especially when you're looking for an unreserved seat.
They would be better if they were just a bit longer to get more text on the screen.

I enjoyed the comfyness of the Voyagers the most. They were quite relaxing to travel on, and there were little gadget things that you can plug your MP3 into.
I still dont particularly like them, but its better than some modern trains.

They are aerodynamically shaped to reduce drag
They send power back in to the system when they brake
What I like about voyagers:
Some seats in coach A have good legroom
They actually have nets on the backs of seats, not those stupid plastic basket things
Not much else!
I've never travelled on the former, but the voyagers have shoddy carpets and dodgy plumbing, and would burn to the ground with a stink in about 15 seconds.
However, they are both externally very smart
