Good splits Edinburgh-Newcastle

I will need to book a ticket on the day so I cannot avail of advance fares.

What would be the best splits and total fare for a weekday after 6PM EDB-NCL (or Newcastle Airport-APN) single (or rtn if cheaper) please ?

Just regarding advance tickets. If I did purchase one, I would pay an additional £10 to change before departure to any other ticket plus the difference in fare between the advance ticket and the new ticket:

E.g. Advance £10, new ticket £20, so total payable is £10 fare difference and £10 change fee?

Does it matter where the ticket is purchased as long as it has been issued? CrossCountry vs VTEC?

Splitting at Berwick usually produces the best results.

One may think if it doesn't show one, that may be because there isn't one that will save money

However, I have just dropped the journey into TrainSplit and it has immediately suggested a Dunbar split, saving £8.10 (though one naturally has to be aware not all trains call there, though as far as Newcastle, there do look to be a reasonable number that do)

Intermediate stations* are Morpeth, Alnmouth, Berwick and Dunbar. Many trains omit one or more of these stops, and Berwick is the only one which won't give you quite a considerable restriction and not all trains call there.

All retailers will charge you £10 per ticket to make changes, with one exception: Trainsplit.com will only charge you one £10 per transaction.

* Other intermediate stations do exist but would result in having to change trains.

I've just read about the possibility of a XC "Day Advance" fare available upto 15 mins before departure. What is the price of this ticket typically vs a booked day in advance fare?

The same. As a general rule, advance tickets only get more expensive with time (as the cheap ones sell out).

As Crossover says, for singles Trainsplit suggests splitting at Dunbar for Edinburgh-Newcastle tickets, and in addition it suggests splitting at Dunbar and Morpeth (e.g. on the 1830) for Edinburgh-Newcastle Airport tickets.

Cross Country still have £24.90 Edinburgh-Newcastle Advance tickets for the 1708 and 2002 today, and the suggestion already given about trying splits at Berwick-upon-Tweed would save additional money on Advances on the 2002 today.
