It's been a while, but I'm getting back into listening to the radio. The only thing putting me off listening more is I can't find a programme with a range of new, unusual music any more. It's either oldies or mainstream or talk. I'm looking for a programme similar to the former BBC Radio 3 programme 'Mixing It', which I used to listen to religiously and helped be discover so many new artists (Sufjan Stevens, The Fiery Furnaces, Jaga Jazzist to name three). Does anyone know of anything remotely similar?

Yes, definitely '6 Music'. whose website will fill in the details of tracks played if you didn't catch the name at the time. One of their presenters, Tom Ravenscroft, is the son of the much missed John Peel, and who seems to have picked up his father's enthusiasm for seeking out a wide range of new and old recordings.

Spotify will help too, with its playlists of very specific genres.

Definitely agree that 6 Music would be your best bet, but with regard to Radio 3, there is also Late Junction, which is broadcast on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11pm, and will bring you a wide variety of (for want of a better phrase) world music.

Thanks, I'm giving 6 Music a go, seems to have some good stuff on now and then. I'll also retry Late Junction, haven't listened to Late Junction in a while.

Since the internet kicked in, my listening of standard FM/DAB music has been reduced to almost zero. Backed up by this week I've had the builders in and they have had their radio on and, yes, I knew (and hate!) every song that's been on <(

Once hooked on internet radio (and there are apps on tellys eg Vtuner, so there's no excuse) and you've favourited your top 5 stations playing the music you want (and not what some gormless commercial radio executive thinks you want) you won't go back. The vast majority DJ/Presenter-free and ad-free.

Although foreign, this is just an example of what's out there. http://www.polskastacja.pl/ even in Polish you can work out classical, trance, relax.... and the playlist in english tells you what's been played and about to be played.

Depends on what types of music you like. I generally prefer rock, e.g. Planet Rock (DAB). A lot of familiar rock songs, but they also have a few more specialised programmes featuring Blues, Progressive Rock & Acoustic Rock - often late at night, but a "listen again" service via their website is available for anything broadcast in the previous 7 days.

Search schedules at:

http://www.planetrock.com/on-air/schedule/2015/11/09/

Also, Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 often has some new / interesting music, but unfortunately his show has been relegated to 03:00 on Sunday - though it can be replayed via BBC website.

Youtube is worth exploring. Enter the name of your favourite artist in the search box, and their suggestions list often includes other musicians making a similar musical genre to your selected musician.

Unless you live in London, when it's also on DAB. Amazing is pretty much *all* new music.
Can't believe I forgot Amazing, seeing as one of the presenters is a mate of mine!

Haha! or, if they're reading this, was!

Some of the stuff on my local radio station ( http://www.sinefm.com/ ) is quite good, haven't listened to all of it but the schedule's quite varied

Unsigned bands and artists can be heard on a radio show called 'Best Of British' which is hosted by Matt Graveling.

It goes out on a good few stations including Tulip Radio in Lincolnshire.
