We are visiting K&WVR tomorrow (Friday). We'll be travelling by train so no car, and would like to find a good 'real ale' pub that does nice lunches somewhere along the line, within walking distance of any of the stations.
Any suggestions?
As a Haworth resident I will back up all that has been said so far. Most of the pubs in Keighley are drinking pubs and not eating pubs, with the Whetherspoons at the top of town about 5 -10 mins walk from the station. The Boltmakers is 2-3 mins walk from the station and serves one of the best pints of Taylors in town.
Ingrow has 2 pubs adjacent to the station but neither sell real ale and are a bit low quality. The chippy is good though.
Oakworth has a decent pub up in the village, although I've not been for bit. Bit of a long trek from the station though.
In Haworth there is plenty of choice. The Oak opposito the station is now quite low quality and nothing like it was some years ago - BUT, despite this fact, the Taylors Golden Best on sale is normally very drinkable indeed and in good health. It is also cheaper than elsewhere in the village. The Old Hall at the bottom of Main Street has a good selection of Jennings and Marstons beers on - I found Morrell's Varsity most pleasant last night. The food is very good but not desperately cheap. The Fleece does good Taylors beer, but I have never eaten there so can't comment. The White Lion further up is always good for food. They have a posh restaurant but do a good selection of bar meals also which are normally quite good value and tasty. The beer selection has been a lot better of late with regular guest beers on tap from a variety of small and medium sized brewers. The Black Bull has recently reopened after a temporary closue after the licensee did a runner, and I've heard mixed reports about the new lot. Now, the important bit, avoid The Kings and The Sun at all costs. They both serve real ale but are a complete rip off. Owned by the same people they are obviously out to exploit tourists as the beer is a good 20 - 30p more expensive than anywhere else in the village for no reason. I refuse to go in either on principle.
There are 2 pubs in Oxenhope village itself both quite good but I've not eaten in either for some time so not sure what the current offering is. The best local pub by far for eating in is The Dog and Gun in Leeming just outside Oxenhope. It is a Taylors pub and is truly superb. Not accessible by public transport however without the aid of a bit of a walk.
Worth visiting in the area is the Crossroads, at Crossroads on the main road between Haworth and Keighley. It is a Copper Dragon pub and does a good selection of tasty beers.
On train, I believe the Jubilee Bar is out this weekend as well so there should be plenty of beer on offer.
It's great standing in the brake van drinking high quality beer with like minded boozers.
