I found the above offer, and it looks like a good deal for anyone travelling within Scotland. The only condition seems to be that you have to shop at a Scottish Sainsburys, but there are quite a few in Glasgow, one in Hamilton, and probably others elsewhere so, if you're in the area, this could be a really good deal!

Offer is: £15 return ticket to anywhere in Scotland on a First Scotrail train. Travel after 0915am M-F, all day weekends, and you effectively get an "Off Peak Return" ticket, with some additional restrictions. You also get a free child place!

Just in case any Scottish person wanted to take advantage of the offer, or anyone in Scotland in the next few weeks.

AIUI there isn't a minmum spend at Sainsburys for this offer either, so bargains all round.

You are correct; no minimum spend!

Just some more info for you all. The website seems not to like you booking for one adult only, and seems to insist that you book with a child. Presumably an error, based on this site. Best to buy in person or over the phone.

Also, a quick routeing query, Glasgow to Elgin is allowed via both Aberdeen and Inverness, therefore for my £15 I can go Glasgow-Inverness-Aberdeen-Glasgow or vice versa? Routeing guide says this is a possible route, but would just like to check to be safe

Also, on the above, can I remain on the same train at Elgin using my return portion? I know it's split ticketing and that that is allowed, but just checking again that it applies with OUT and RTN portions alike.

Correct, Glasgow (or any Strathclyde station) to Elgin is valid via either Aberdeen or Inverness in either direction. No rule against you staying on the train at Elgin either when switching from the outward to return portion.

Just checking £15 is a bloody good price for a trip around Scotland; would it be pushing it a bit too far to travel via Edinburgh? Certainly a valid route, and one that I shall be trying out

So in summary; Glasgow-Inverness-Aberdeen-Edinburgh-Glasgow for £15. Beat that!

If much of it was on HSTs, that would be impressive. Sitting on a 170 to Inverness, 158 to Aberdeen and 170 to Edinburgh with one more round to Glasgow...Dedication to the task, would help you become a 170 top man but not much else

But still good value if you're rather keen on scratching the track.

I love 170s! And, I'm hoping for an HST to Edinburgh! Should be in at 13.00, allowing about 2 hours in Aberdeen before the HST leaveth.

Hi guys, and thanks again for all help Re: my cheap trip to Elgin. Bought the ticket and saved myself a lot of money! Well, OK, I actually wasted £15.45 because I wouldn't be travelling otherwise, but you know what I mean

I shall be making a few trips to Sainsbury's over the next few days, and I'll try to amass a small pile of vouchers for future use

Just noticed - the second link in the original post is actually to the press release of last year's (2007) promotion, so don't go by information in that (the dates are more restricted this year). Only the first link is this year's offer!

You might want to try upgrading to First Class - in theory it's £5 each leg (i.e. Glasgow - Inverness, Inverness - Aberdeen, Aberdeen - Edinburgh) but in the past conductors have been happy to allow me a through journey across Inverness on the one supplement. Nice big seat and table, and you should also get orange juice, cake, biscuits, tea and coffee thrown in providing the wheels don't fall off the trolley.

Sorry to keep bothering you all but is there catering on the 0706 ex GLQ to INV? Not showing on the NXEC website, but is showing on the scotrail paper timetables. Also, it should be operated by a "buffet" ex-Hull Trains unit (according to some out of date diagrams). 3-4 hours is a long time without a cuppa

It's not showing a catering service at weekdays or weekends, so I'll assume it's wrong. Certainly a service of this duration really should have a catering service, so I'll assume it's an error on the NXEC system. Just for such a long journey, it'd be nice to have a cuppa

When you were on it, Sean, was it a buffet or a trolley?
