Hi there,
I hope I'm talking to the right people, I just have a question regarding train fare. I am a football fan and am supposed to be travelling to Liverpool this Saturday, I was wondering if anyone had any tips to keep the price down? I find it really hard to get to game at the minute, being priced off of the railways
I am trying to go from Banbury to Liverpool Central.
Thank you very much for your help! I realise I'm not much of a railway enthusiast, just thought you boys and girls would be the perfect people to ask. Thanks again!

Hi mate,

Getting from Banbury-Liv Ctl is a lot easier Banbury-Liv Lime St (changing at Birmingham New St). Lime St-Ctl is a 4 min walk tops, or two min on the train

Welcome to the forum Matt.

I'm pretty sure the services will be to Liverpool Lime Street rather than Liverpool Central. The only route I know of from Banbury will involve a change at Birmingham New Street. An off peak adult return should be £44.20, and I think you'll have to catch specific trains for that. Anytime tickets are more versatile but cost more.

That's ticket splitting it basically means you use several tickets for one section of the journey instead of having one expensive ticket.

National Express coach would be cheaper, but also take a hell of a lot longer. I'm trying to work out some ticket splitting options but my internet is having issues with the sites at the moment. In fact, the only website it's not having hissy-fits at is this one. Always knew this was the top-quality forum!

Birmingham - Liverpool £9 single
Liverpool - Birmingham £9 single

So £32.80

Probably still possible to beat that.

Splitting the legs using returns looks like it'll be £14.80 Banbury to Birmingham New Street and £30.50 Birmingham to Liverpool Lime Street. Again that's the off-peak returns which are cheapest, and I think you have to use specific trains for those. It's £1.10 more than the straight through return. Can't think off the top of my head any other worthwhile routings from Banbury, but I'm sure there are others here who will know the route better than me.

Agree though, I'd choose train over coach any day!

Banbury to Spring Road is £12.60 return, and you could get on / off at Birmingham, you don't have to finish the journey to Spring Road.

Rugby to Liverpool, London Midland only super off-peak return is £15.50.

That is valid to get off at Birmingham on the return, but the rules say you have to get on at Rugby on the outward journey (you can then either change at Birmingham or via Lichfield and change at Stafford)

You could use a ticket to Spring Road to get to Coventry, then a £4.50 single to Rugby, then back to Birmingham on the super-off-peak return from Rugby to Liverpool, and the same ticket for Birmingham to Liverpool.
The return is simply direct to Birmingham, then any train to Banbury.

Total cost is £28.10 + £4.50 = £32.60.
Valid on all London Midland services at the weekend (which is all the direct trains between Birmingham and Liverpool).

from Wrexham and Shropshire's site:
Banbury to Tame Bridge Parkway £7.50 return

then Tame Bridge to Liverpool is the same price as from Birmingham with the £9 singles already mentioned.

Means doubling back to New Street but £25.50

Do the timings on W&S make sense for football at Anfield? Only problem with the open access operators is they do not have enough trains.

Banbury to Tamworth - £18.00 (two advanced singles at £9)
Tamworth to Liverpool - £14.50 (london midland only)

Think that is the simplest £32.50 going.

With the WS option earliest arrival in Liverpool is 13.10, latest departure from Liverpool is 16.48

So that would be no good for the W&S, shame really because that would definitely be the better train.

One thing is for sure, there is no advantage to going to Liverpool South Parkway then travelling on a saveaway (which would of course take in any way of getting between Lime Street and Goodison), it is £14.50 from Tamworth there as well
