I live in a small rural town (which I hate) and have been thinking about relocating to Glasgow. Does anyone here know what areas are good and bad in terms of crime, anti social behavior etc.

I was always under the impression that the gorbals was one of the worst and most dangerous areas however when I was walking through the area last year I didn’t seem to bad and a lot of people say it’s quite pleasant now so perhaps some of my information is out of date

I was born and bred about half a mile from the Gorbals and I can assure you it was more dangerous by means of media myth rather than reality.

Have you got a job lined up in Glasgow?

Gorbals i think is great place to live as its within walking distance of the City Centre, living in East Kilbride thats something i envy.

Good areas are the West End , areas in East Renfrewshire, areas of Southside.

Bad areas if you can call them that. The estates like Castlemilk , east end , Govanhill , north side of city etc.

Id say the area around Central station probaby has high crime figures,

I don't think they are a a bad as they once were, but I'd certainly call Castlemilk, Govanhill etc more unpleasant shall we say.

Glaagow Southside and East Ren are probably the nicest areas in and around the city

How small is the town (population)?
Why do you hate it?
I think you should spend some time exploring Glasgow and see for yourself before making a big decision
Dunno about poor areas, but Glasgow must have some rich leafy suburbs to match anything down in England

the town has a population of around 6000 and is about 60 miles from Glasgow. I used to travel to Glasgow 2/3 times a week before the lockdown started (haven’t been since) Public transport is very unreliable and fairly infrequent which makes matters worse

I was born and grew up in Dundee until the age of 16 then went to live with my father and his family abroad. I returned to Scotland when I was 20 and now have ended up in the town I’m in now.
I think I’m more used to living in a city environment and there would be more opportunity for me.

Yes, not as bad certainly as 20 to 30 years ago. I do like the Southside the most, though it can be quiet. West End is Glasgow without Glaswegians.

What to do like and dislike about Glasgow?

Like most cities, Glasgow does have its good and bad places. Castlemilk and the area around Springburn and Easterhouse are a little bit rough, so I’d avoid there.

You don’t necessarily need to stay in Glasgow per say. You could get a house in the likes of Paisley, Johnstone or Dalmuir, all close to the city with frequent links.

That subreddit has to be my least favourite on Reddit - they seem to love downvoting for anything.

Easterhouse, Govanhill & Parkhead are all areas I prefer to avoid. I live in North Lanarkshire and almost all of the towns around here should be avoided. Coatbridge, Airdrie, Cumbernauld, Motherwell - don't like any of them.

I love the City Centre, South Side and West End. I agree with the comment that the West End is Glasgow without Glaswegians.

I lived in Govanhill for 25 years and I don't recognise it as being in anyway a dangerous place.

I said "unpleasant" not dangerous. Personally I've felt it's one of the more neglected areas of the city in need of development and sprucing up.

To be fair thinking about it, Easternhouse and Castlemilk are probably the worst but I don't really go there so it's difficult for me to give a first-hand opinion, whereas I have been to Govanhill quite frequently so I'm really comparing Govanhill to the Southside.

It is a bit, but it has its busy spots.

Springburn/Cowlairs is really dodgy in my experience, southside and west End being my preferences for best

Who lives in West End, if not Glaswegians?

There are a lot of foreign students particularly from Asia in the West end compared to even 10/15 years ago. I'm not far from the West end tbh but even though it's a 10/15 min bus journey from me the difference between where I stay and Partick/Hillhead is night and day

Students from elsewhere, people from up north of Scotland too. Has a nice buzz in the summer.

Quiet area of Southside is Mt Florida and Cathcart. Desirable places to live but no buzz about it. Lots areas are like that in Glasgow, just residential with no buzz.

Whereas Victoria Road and Strathbungo are the next Finnieston, theres a buzz now. Shawlands has potential but never quite gets there.

Strathbungo has definitely taken off in recent years

I have lived in Giffnock, East renfrewshire for most of my life and I'd say it's one of the best all round parts of the greater Glasgow area. Lots of amenities, green spaces, excellent transport links and very safe. Downside is property is very expensive. I lived in Shawlands in the late 90s when it was meant to be the new West end but that never happened and I feel it's slowly gone the other way although I did enjoy living there at the time.

Giffnock does have a good frequent bus into the town, the 38. A morrisons and now a lidl. Plus the train. Yes, heard that with Shawlands.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
The Springburn area has the dubious honour of having the highest amount of drug related deaths in the last couple of years. There are various articles in the Glasgow Evening Times.

The Calton has the dubious honour of having the UK's lowest life expectancy of 56 years according to the World Health Organisation report back in 2008/9. This means that somebody residing in the Calton who is in paid employment and liable for paying National Insurance contributions towards their State Pension, will not live long enough to actually see a penny of their State Pension.

There are actually a lot of nice areas in my opinion. I did a nice walk from Clarkston station along the river last month; that area seemed desirable to me, with plenty of parks and open spaces.

Datashine can be useful...

I live just up the road from Clarkston. Where was the nice walk out of interest?

I've had business at the Network Rail complex near Springburn station on a few occasions, and it has to be said I hate going there. The area is extremely grim.

I don't have much experience of the area but I'm not at all fond of the north. I've travelled recreationally on most of the lines around the Glasgow area and the Maryhill line is my least favourite - don't like it at all. I can't put my finger on why but it isn't a pleasant journey.

Of course - the drab and claustrophobic 158s don't help.

Yeah the line passes through mostly industrial estates. The north side of city does not have as much to it as other parts , with the exception of Maryhill.

A lot of the North Glasgow areas aren't particularly pleasant to be fair.

Maryhill, Summerston, Cadder, Milton, Possilpark, Springburn and Saracen Cross are all very unpleasant experiences

I've heard stories of crossbow bolts being fired at the Network Rail building up there (over the live running line of course) and I believe a pub in the area got shut down after a drive by shooting - really not the nicest area.
