Next Tuesday I need to be in Henley by 09.00. This would mean taking the 06.48 from Gomshall and changing at Reading. I noticed it was 4 minutes late arriving in Reading today, leaving less than 4 minutes to get the 8.00 Reading to Henley.

On Monday there were delays causes by signalling problems at Reigate. There is not a realistic earlier train. Am I right in presuming that Great Western will not wait for a late connection at Reading?

Correct. They wouldn't wait. They'd only wait for the staff needed to run the service.

The backup would get you there at 0856 with a choice of 3 trains to Twyford and a cross platform connection. Is that too late?

The 8.56 will be too late, but I have the option of getting a taxi from Reading.
