Gold Card rules

I have been checking the map here and I can see that Gold Card is not valid, say, between Coventry and Euston on Avanti but is valid on London Northwestern. I was wondering what is going to happen in case of ticket acceptance being in place? Would I be able to use a Gold Card discounted ticket then? Similarly, I see between Leamington and Banbury the card is valid on Chiltern, but not on Cross Counrtry. So, if Chiltern is severally disrupted, would I be needing a new ticket? Finally, what would be the fastest and least painful way to get a Gold card? I can get to Lapworth relatively easy, but I am not sure if there is a ticket office..

Yes

There is no ticket office at Lapworth - Is that your closest station? Or are you just asking about Lapworth because Hatton - Lapworth is cheapest? If the latter, then you don't need to buy the season from that station, you can buy it from any station in the Gold Card area.

If there's no convenient station near to you, then you can buy the season online and any retailer should print it on Gold Card stock (or issue you a season on a smartcard and issue you a separate Gold Record Card).

You could buy it at any ticket office in the Gold Card area.

If ticket acceptance is in place then your ticket is valid.

I suggest purchasing the ticket at a ticket office rather than online because we have had reports of Gold Record Cards not being sent out when purchased online. As noted above any ticket office in the Gold Card area can sell the ticket.

The cheapest annual season ticket qualifying for Gold Card status is Hatton to Lapworth which is £212

In theory. Don't be surprised if you encounter problems in practice. As recently as last year, GWR's ticket office system did not treat this journey as qualifying for a Gold Card.

The Newhaven Town to Newhaven harbour one is £216 this year. It looks like you can order it instantly as a s ticket on the Southern App, I'm not sure how an S ticket Gold card works

I assume it will be a digital railcard within the appropriate train operator's app (this was added to the digital railcards specification a while ago), rather than them sending you a Gold Record Card in the post.

In theory - but in practice, Trainline failed to issue any Railcard when my brother tried this. I advised him to take it up with Trainline's customer services but I don't know if it ended up getting sorted.

My goal is to avoid a confrontation with the ticket office stuff. Leamington and Warwick are staffed, so I suppose one of those should work. I managed to get the forum ticketing website to offer me a gold fare for Kenilworth - Oxford off-peak return by requesting a change in Banbury. Assuming I have such a ticket: Kenilworth - Leamington Spa (WMR), Leamington Spa - Banbury (Chiltern), Banbury - Oxford (XC), the bottleneck seems to be LMS - BAN, which is restricted to Chiltern only. Just to confirm, is it correct that if the intended Chiltern service is delayed/cancelled, I would be stuck at LMS for an hour waiting for the next one?

If the expected delay in reaching your final destination would be 61+ minutes by sticking to the terms of your ticket (i.e. effectively Chiltern only between LMS and BAN) then you would be entitled to exercise your right to "re-routing at the earliest opportunity" under Article 16 of the Passenger Rights and Obligations Regulation.

This right would need to be exercised against the operator at 'fault' for your delay, i.e. WMT if you miss your connection at LMS due to disruption on the Kenilworth to LMS leg, or Chiltern if it's due to problems with the LMS to BAN leg. As per the other thread, generally I would suggest PRO rights are best exercised in writing (e.g. via social media) so that there is clear written evidence of you having exercised it.

The right to re-routng would, in practice, require WMT/Chiltern to either endorse your ticket to be valid on another operator (e.g. by giving you a stamped form), giving you written permission, issuing you a zero fare excess, or buying you a new ticket.

Of course we know that in practice all but the first option are vanishingly unlikely to be provided, and since Chiltern manage LMS, their station staff may well refuse to do anything on behalf of WMT if it is their train that has caused the disruption. (I can't say that specifically for the LMS station staff, but it has been my experience at other stations served by multiple operators.)

In the event the operator at fault refuses to honour your re-routing request, I would suggest buying a new ticket as required, and then submitting a complaint to customer services after your journey asking for reimbursement of the cost of that ticket. Unfortunately when I've done this in the past with respect to other PRO rights, it has often required me to send a Letter Before Claim or even commence legal action before the TOC has agreed to pay up.

It shouldn't be this complicated, but unfortunately it often is. Once Chiltern and XC come into DfT ownership, the situation will improve slightly as there is automatic ticket acceptance between DfT TOCs in the event of cancellations.

This generally applies to the 2 trains before or after the cancelled service, or in some cases this is extended to 2 hours either side. For inexplicable reasons this acceptance doesn't cover missed connections or delays, so there are still gaps where you would need to rely on your PRO rights.

Thank you so much. After XC changed their booking system and made me spent over 10 hours on a phone amending various advance tickets I have had, I decided it might be easier to get a gold card and to stick to off-peak return. I will see how it goes...

Other retailers are available for fee free advance amendments... Railsmartr allow digital amendments for e-ticket bookings (never tried) and rebook+refund by email for TOD (collect at station-have amended tickets this way, and it worked flawlessly).

By s ticket do you mean a ticket loaded onto the Key Smartcard? If so, then it's likely anyone ordering such a ticket will be sent a physical Gold Card in the post. I've been purchasing my annual season ticket for Arlesey to Biggleswade from Thameslink (not Southern, but still part of GTR) for several years now as smart seasons on the Key, and each time they've sent me the Annual Gold/Gold Record card in the post a week or so later (including my most recent one back in February).

I know, but it seems that off-peak return with a gold card would be cheaper than two advance singles even at best prices. Not much cheaper, but definitely more convenient!
