Gold Card rant

For the last 5 years I have held an Annual Gold Card Ryde St. John’s Road - Ryde Esplanade, aka the ‘ticket to Ryde’. However it’s not always plain sailing getting some of the advantages that a Gold Card is alleged to have.

Firstly, the First Class £5 supplement is almost impossible to get. I have had many 25 minute sessions at Kings Cross, Kings Lynn, Watford Junction, and lately Staines booking offices while computers, manuals, telephones, and other staff were consulted. I have been told that “it’s only sold in the London area” (at Kings Lynn), that “you have to buy it at the same time as your ticket”, and on SWT I’ve been issued with a weekend first supplement instead (which is fine to certain extent, except when the journey continues with another (ex NSE) TOC and I wonder if it will accepted).

Some booking office staff know exactly what to do, but it seems that most have ‘never heard of it’. In addition, although the National Rail Enquiries website makes mention of the Gold Card first supplement, TOC annual season ticket publicity does not mention it at all. It’s almost as if some (maybe all) TOCs want to let it be quietly forgotten about.

I however, have not forgotten about it and expect to make use of this ‘advantage’, but if it is impossible to get, where do I stand?
Can I just go sit in FC and offer to pay the guard?
Am I expected, first, to have a 25 minute session at the ticket window in front of a line of impatient passengers?
If I am unable to buy this supplement at the station, is the guard/RPI obliged to sell it to me? And what about when there is no ticket office open?
And what if the journey involves an ‘opportunity’ to try again at an interchange point - am I really expected, on say a Staines - Colchester journey, to have a second ‘go’ at the ticket office there after trying unsuccessfully at the origin station? It’s not much fun having to have yet another 25 minute ‘consultation’ especially if that means missing my train, or worse, not having time to grab a cuppa!
Do I have a ‘right’ to this Gold Card FC supplement, or is it to be regarded as a rare privilege, grudgingly given, at the whim of a train operating company?

And as for the second thing, trying to persuade LUL ticket office staff to let me have the Gold Card discount added to my Oyster card, well that’s for another time…

I entirely feel your pain.

I have had apology letters from SWT (in relation to FC supplement) and TfL (Oyster loading) but even when I have gone to ticket offices with those letters as evidence I am still told I am making up those products and made to feel like a fraudster!

I've had gold card entitlements added to my Oyster card at Old Street (twice) and Paddington (most recently). Only once, early last year, at Tower Hill did I encounter...well, let's say ill-informed or untrained staff.

On the 1st class thing - I wish I could say I was surprised at the problems you've run into. But (not least given the minimal publicity given) it's a ludicrous state of affairs.

It's hugely variable. I've found FGW pretty good at issuing the GC supplements (have used them a few times on the Cotswold Line). Southeastern seem to deny their existence ("oh no, they stopped those years ago"). And FCC, well... It took 20 minutes (and a missed train) last week just to excess an Off-Peak to an Anytime!

Thing is, I understand that some tickets are not sold as often as others, and I genuinely would have no complaint if the clerk did not know where the option was on their system and had to take a couple of minutes or ask someone for help. The problem is the arrogant insistence that they are correct, which carries with it an implied accusation that I am trying to beat the system, or get something for nothing. It's so frustrating!

This has been recently discussed on my website on the Railcard Discounts page. Someone has raised the issue as a FOI request and asked for confirmation that training is being undertaken. In the main I rexommend Underground stations attached to mainline terminii, and I have personal good experiences with London Bridge.

Mike, do you know if the gold card discount is now automatically loaded when a person buys an annual travelcard on Oyster? This was not previously the case, and I reckon thousands have lost out.

Having used FasTIS, I can confirm that discounts do not apply themselves automatically.

£5 supplements were a piece of cake - simply added as a supplement to a Gold Card purchase, or zero excess then add supplement if someone was upgrading on the return portion of a period ticket.

Furthermore, I've never had a problem getting my 16-25 railcard and Gold Cards added to my Oysters. Again, I've used FasTIS and it's a very easy process. There are enough leaflets available stating that Gold Cards qualify as NR Railcards (in a FasTIS context) so perhaps being armed with one of those is the way forward. Having said that, some people tend to have a really stinky attitude if you as a clerk make a mistake, which never helps matters. Always be polite, even if the person on the other side of the window doesn't seem to have two brain cells to rub together.

You're all going to the wrong ticket offices anyway :p. I never once argued with a customer because I didn't know what I was doing - for things that came up once in a blue moon like The Original Tour bus tickets, cycle reservations, LU group tickets etc. I was always happy to look things up and ensure I found out within a few minutes. People in certain ticket offices will ring me if they have a difficult enquiry as usually I will remember how exactly to deal with it - couldn't possibly say which ones though!

I'm not Mike, but I can say that it is not; the clerk has to add it in a separate transaction.

I tried to purchase a Pershore to Potters Bar SOS with Gold Card discount plus the Gold Card 1st suplment at a FCC station today for travel next week.
They could not find the 1st supplement on the machine.
They could issue the discounted ticket but when they clicked on the supplments button the Gold Card 1st upgrade does not appear on the list (various options like for bikes or sleeprs etc did appear)
That is how they normally issue the supplements apparently.

Do they need to issue it separately to the mai ticket?

Hoping to get it done tomorrow as will be in Shropshire next week out of the Network area & near unstaffed stations otherwise next opportunity will be at Hereford or the TM on the Train. (planning to get 1st Hereford to Pershore single to go with the Pershore-PBR ticket)

Having just checked on Journey Planner, it appears that a Gold Card supplement isn't available with the SOS for some reason. It's possible to work round it by choosing the Off-Peak Day Return and choosing the supplement from there, then removing the Off-Peak Day Return from the basket.

Cheers,

Barry

Thanks Barry,
I'll try again at the station tomorrow - will also be able to try at another station if necessary.
