Going to Wimbledon and back - just on tram - advice

Hi All,

I’ve seen a few threads around this topic but am hoping for clarification on what is needed when travelling to Wimbledon station just on the tram.

I’ll be starting at Woodside tram stop, going to Wimbledon, leaving the station to meet someone, then returning by the exact same route.

I assume tap in at Woodside then only tap out at barriers to leave the station at Wimbledon. And this won’t suddenly start a new fare?

Then coming back, which will be very shortly afterwards - tap in at entry barriers to Wimbledon station and then again on the tram platform - and that’s it.

Is there anything I can do wrong here? I get the sense that there are a few exits to Wimbledon station that might cause issue. And I wonder if my only very brief stay in Wimbledon and returning, might confuse the system!

Can someone tell me the difference between an “automatic gate” and a “manual gate”? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a TfL gate that I need to push open manually so wanted to clarify what that means, in case it’s something specific to Wimbledon station.

Wimbledon isn't a TfL station, it's National Rail. An automatic gate is one which opens when you tap or put your ticket in.
A manual gate is one physically opened by a member of staff, but where you would still normally tap on a stand-alone reader.

I don't think Wimbledon has any manual gates anymore - I expect it might just be outdated information!

Oh... I thought it might be when there is no gate at all and you just walk out of the station and have to remember to tap your card. Good to know I should avoid helpful staff opening gate for me with luggage! Thanks!
