Going to Plymouth

I am booked on the Cotswold Line Promotion Group day trip from Worcester to Plymouth. Is the only route to Plymouth go through Dawlish? I would really like to travel on that now famous section of track. I last did it as a child probably 35 years back. It is an early memory. I can still picture the compartment. Any idea if we will go that way?

Yes, the route through Dawlish is the only way to get to Plymouth.

Stephen, how refreshing to get a post from someone who knows nothing about railway routes. As others pointed out, we have had a discussion here about the old alternative Tavistock route. If you do a search using that name you will find extensive correspondence - a good read to pass the time while you are on the way down.

I thought I would walk to the Hoe and then get something to to eat. It is about five hours each way on the train so I will need a good meal. Really looking forward to the trip.

Interesting about Tavistock. Now Dawlish is open again I suppose they don't have to think about a diversion.

Hello Stephen.When you pass through Dawlish look at the view out to sea.Priceless. Make sure you get HST they are fantastic trains. When you get to Plymouth you will pass plenty of shops and take aways.The hoe is very good as well. If you manage to stop off at Dawlish, lovely town,lovely people and the sea wall is beautiful walk. I think its open from viaduct to kennaway tunnel only though. Hope you enjoy your time in south west.

There's a good Chinese on the Barbican, up a flight of stairs, opposite a Wetherspoons that's always very crowded in my experience. Nothing much on the Hoe foodwise.

Thank you regarding Chinese. I did wonder if there would be much food on the Hoe. It is going to be a long day. The HST should have a full buffet but I will need a proper meal. I will take packed breakfast and dinner for the train. I think it will be a good day.

train ticket to Devon from Worcester.

Thank you. This is the information on the route. There is no mention of Dawlish but as this forum has said it is the only way.

An Excursion Train to Exeter St David's, Teignmouth, NewtonAbbot, Totnes, and Plymouth. Our High Speed Train will start at Worcester Shrub Hill and cover the whole Cotswold Line to Oxford. It will then proceed to Plymouth via Swindon, Chippenham, Melksham, Westbury and Taunton. The return journey will be taking a different route beyond Taunton and proceed to Swindon via Bristol and Bath Spa.

Apart from the Cotswold Line all this will be new to me so it should be interesting. Going dark on the way home I would guess

Must admit that too am intrigued that someone who is interested enough to take a rail trip, has such a limited knowledge of our railway network.

Still - the chaps honestMust admit though, like I am sure the great majority of us forum users, I love travel by train.

But, I am not over keen on high speed travel. So, where I considering a trip down to Plymouth - excellent idea BTW. I would take a more direct route. Via Cheltenham to Bristol TM, the direct line would the be on to Exeter. Though as we do know here, one could take a direct train that passes through Westbury, so you could change either here or Salisbury then catch another on to Exeter

It is quite a walk from Plymouth station to the Hoe, and, the Barbican is slightly off route, plus the fact though I've been many times, i can still get lost Far the best way for someone who is a bit limited as regards navigation would be via Armada Way, that really is nice.

Yes, I do like Plymouth. Well worth spending a couple of night there - take some rail trips out too

I presume the train stops at Teignmouth (but not Dawlish). If you tire of Plymouth, you could buy a single to Teignmouth, have a walk along the sea wall, and pick up the return
HST there.

Thank you for all the advice. It is very useful. I think I will try the. Barbican and Hoe. The rest of Plumouth will wait for another trip. I am not sure if I can get off an on at the places on the way. I assumed it was a non stop trip. I may well be wrong.

No intrigue regarding me booking this trip. It is part of the country (and rail network) I am not familiar with so I thought it would be interesting. It was also from my local station, reasonably priced and on a day I am free. No mystery at all.

The Barbican and the Hoe are not the only nice places, Royal William Yard is another fine area for food. And a trip out to observe the Royal Albert Bridge from below or outside of a train is well worth it.
