Going to London in a few weeks

I asked my mam to book me a return to London for Early April, while I was waiting for a replacement Debit Card to come.

I was expecting her booking DHM-KGX Return, but she booked SUN-KGX Return, the train down to London is via Newcastle on LNER and tne Return is Grand Central on the Outbound Journey my im booked on the 10:27 from NCL and stops at Durham 11 minutes later. Would my ticket work on the Gateline at Durham or am I obligated to get on Newcastle...Just going I find it easier going from Durham...

Obviously I know coming back Im on Grand Central, but going Down, id much rather goto Durham than trail up to Newcastle

@FozzQuaker. What ticket(s) have you had booked for you exactly? Start station? End station? Two x Advance Singles (one each way) perhaps, so not a traditional return as such? Price paid? Restricted for travel with LNER & Connections (Southbound) and Grand Central (Northbound) only? Any railcard discount?

Many retailers will refund erroneous bookings within a few hours, even Advances. Rather than trying it on, if yours will then that's the best plan.

Advance Singles...Both Ways

Southbound...LNER and Required Connecting Services
Northbound...Grand Central Only

There is no gateline at Durham, on either platform.

Didnt there used to be Barriers at Durham, I haven't been to Durham Station for many years

Many retailers will refund erroneous bookings within a few hours, even Advances. Rather than trying it on, if yours will then that's the best plan.

They were booked a couple of weeks, I only added them to Google Wallet earlier on today

So basically, you'll (supposedly) be travelling on an Advance Single from Sunderland to London Kings Cross, travelling with Tyne and Wear Metro between Sunderland and Newcastle and then with LNER between Newcastle and London Kings Cross, but instead you're actually wanting to board at Durham, the next stop for your booked train after Newcastle?

Officially, with an Advance Single, customers may not start, break and resume, or end their journey at any intermediate station except to change to/from connecting trains as shown on the ticket(s) or other valid travel itinerary.

P.S. On the return (Northbound) journey with Grand Central, your booked train, is presumably one from London Kings Cross heading to Sunderland, and so won't be calling at Durham, will it?

Starting short with an Advance ticket is against the terms and conditions of the ticket.

That said, (unpublished) policy of the rail industry is that although Advance tickets are intended to be used only between the origin and destination stations shown on the ticket, there may be occasions where a passenger joins the correct train but at a later station, or alights earlier than the indicated destination. Although this is not strictly in accordance with the rules for Advance tickets, the Rail industry has agreed that in such cases, no additional fare should be charged (unless there is clear evidence of intent to try and avoid a higher fare).

Correct The Southbound Portion Starts with a run on the Metro to Newcastle. And for the Northbound Trip, thats what I wanted anyway, I was expecting a round trip on Grand Central, as I said I didnt realise till I downloaded the tickets into Google Wallet that I had to goto Newcastle

So, as per the rules, the answer technically, is no, I cant board the train at Durham, but, should I do so, that I probably wont be hit with an additional fare. I was just wondering with it being the same train and i'd be joining 10 minutes after I was meant to
