Godalming to Epsom

Hi All

My office has moved and I am now looking at commuting from Godalming to Epsom on an annual.

I see two fares quoted:

1) via Leatherhead only
2) not via London terminals.

My questions please:

For the first option, would this include via Guildford and Dorking? (I have assumed but the Dorking train does go through Leatherhead)?

For the second, would this be valid via Clapham Junction? And would it also be valid via Guildford/Dorking? (Same as above)

TBH it’s the CJ route I’m most interested in (Dorking is more for emergency use but still useful to know).

Have you considered that there is a direct service from Guildford to Epsom?* Going via Dorking would involve walking from Dorking Deepdene to Dorking Main, and generally takes longer.

*Although this service is only hourly off peak, half hourly at peak times. So it depends on your exact timings - via Dorking could be faster

Thank you - I have indeed. Journey planner does route via Dorking because of the gaps you mention.

Obviously if Not Via London does permit CJ route as well as the direct (and Dorking) it also allows more intermediate journeys to be made…

Unfortunately neither option is valid via Dorking, nor is the "not via London" option valid via Clapham Junction. Dorking certainly wouldn't be an unreasonable route and it wouldn't undercut any fares to allow travel that way.

Clapham Junction would arguably be a reasonable route (especially during disruption) but allowing travel via there would open up a loophole unless they charged as much as a Clapham Junction season.

As it stands, in addition to the obvious route via Effingham Junction, the "not via London" option gives you the option of going via Woking, Wimbledon and Motspur Park, or via Woking, Wimbledon, Streatham and Sutton (but not between Wimbledon and Sutton directly, which is surely an oversight).

If you wanted the season to be valid via Dorking, the cheapest option I've found is to get a Godalming to Box Hill season and to combine this with a Leatherhead to Epsom season. Godalming to Box Hill is valid either via Dorking or via Leatherhead hence it does actually join up with the above Leatherhead to Epsom season.

Godalming to Ewell East/Sutton tickets are valid via a worrying number of routes, it might be worth looking into them

Given the timings of the Godalming Guildford service and even admitting the multiplicity of destinations available from the latter would it not be simpler just to accept that in reality it's going to be Godalming Guildford Leatherhead Epsom? There may well be all sorts of other possible routes visiting parts of the SWR network - if you want to spend hours doing it.
