Gobowen - Leeds Day Return

Ok I normally travel from Wrexham, however I'm travelling with friends and we want to go to Leeds they are getting on the train at Gobowen, I'm getting on at Wrexham.

It's for any day in August, no railcards they don't have them.

I'll split my tickets at Stalybridge taking the cost down to £28.90. ( I'll also have 16-25 discount.)

But this doesn't work for Gobowen. So the challenge is to beat £46.40 for an Off peak return. I've tried splitting at Warrington and Stalybridge but it doesn't bring it down by much.

Your help is much appreciated.

If you don't mind going via Chester and Manchester Pic, how about:

Anytime Day Return: GOBOWEN to Earlestown @ £10.70 (route ANY PERMITTED )
Off Peak Day Return: Earlestown to Bradford F Sq @ £17.90 (route NOT PRESTN/LPOOL) (I1) alighting at Leeds - Permitted under map GM+LY

Can you start short on the Gobowen to Earlestown ticket? Ie at Wrexham General.

The only ticket types that prohibit starting short are Advance (and other promotional tickets restricted to specific trains including Megatrain) tickets, and depending on your interpretation of the NRCoC, possibly the outward portion of some Off Peak (without the Day suffix) tickets that have a restriction code that forbids break of journey. The Manual states that restrictions can only apply to the outward portion, not the return portion (and before anyone mentions it, no I don't care what gibber LM put in their validity codes quite frankly as unfair contracts legislation deals with that).

As your ticket is an Anytime ticket, then by definition starting short must be allowed. There are no restriction codes applicable to Anytime tickets. (and before anyone mentions it, yes I am aware of the unenforceable nonsense restriction on certain Rail & Sail tickets!)

Note that for a "break of journey" (which includes starting short) to be disallowed it must be "made clear" in the publications and notices of the company (and before anyone mentions NFM restriction codes, they are not publications and notices!). Whether or not it is "made clear" that some Off Peak outward portions forbid break of journey is, to me, well... not clear!
