You have a really old newbie here so please forgive any board protocol errors. I have not travelled on a u.k. train since HM Queen came to the throne, when we used to speak to a nice little man who served tickets through a small opening in his office window. He told us all about or journey and where to change trains etc. Then a porter took our bags to the carriage for a shilling or two.

Now the nitty gritty: I am travelling Cambridge to Dublin on a Sailrail ticket and shall be changing at Tottenham Hale so that I arrive in London at Euston and not Kings Cross.
When I try to buy a return ticket I am not offered the chance to change at Tottenham Hale.
Without enduring great pain I do not want to walk from Euston to Kings Cross. Will it break any rules or offend any train Companies if having bought a ticket from A to C via B then travel A to C via B2?

Firstly welcome to the forum.
Although i can not help you on the fares side of things, walking between Kings Cross and St P is not that far 15 minuites at most but obviously for people who struggle walking long distances it can be quite a challenge. Dont forget the tube as well depending on what time off day it is you can quite easily get a seat.

Have you tried putting "Via Tottenham Hale" in the route field?

As I would imagine the software is suggesting you use the faster Great Northern service from Cambridge to Kings Cross rather than the slower Greater Anglia service

Mick, what you propose seems fine. I have just tried booking Cambridge to Dublin (Port, sailing with Stena) on the Arriva Trains Wales website. If I ask to be routed via Euston, I get £45 singles with a journey that involves changing onto the underground at Finsbury Park. If I ask to be routed via Tottenham Hale, I get £45 singles with a journey that involves changing onto the underground at Tottenham Hale (and similarly if trying to buy tickets to Dublin Port for a sailing with Irish Ferries).

(And if I don't put in a "via" point, I get offered £43 singles via Birmingham rather than London.)

Arrrh. I could not find a ticket selling web site with a 'via' offered. Quite possible my brain was in neutral and I did not try hard enough before screaming for help. I shall make myself do 100 lines and then have a search.
Anyway thank you all for a very nice introduction to what looks like a very good forum. The C.O. and I have just stopped globe trotting by air and have got ourselves a DPRC so I shall be looking in often.

I was right. I shouted help too soon. Since my first visit to this forum I have found so many other ticket sites, some bad but mostly good.
As a demonstration of where I went wrong in the first place: The first site that I tried and that I assumed were all much of a muchness was VT (I’m learning the jargon) on which there are no ‘via’ options. ........ until one spots the ‘change journey’ in red text.
We live and learn and I have learned hch from this forum already.
