Go Cornwall Bus

Some weeks ago I had a conversation with an ex First Kernow driver who had already switched to driving for Go Cornwall.
I told him he was likely to sometimes be driving two door buses ex London after mid February.

He was of the opinion the centre door would not be used but I understand the ramp/wheelchair lift for London specification is fitted to the centre door. So that would mean the centre door would have to remain in use.

Please correct me if this is incorrect.
First's E400 and Gemini 2 open toppers retained the centre door with ramp (converted from powered to manual). The front door only was used the majority of the time, although some drivers did use the centre door at busy stops. And of course the centre door was always used for wheelchairs.

The centre doors are routinely used on Go South Coast's ex-London Optare E400s.

Thank you for clarifying that.

You're welcome. Also, I would assume that the tap-off readers will be installed at the front door making it the default exit anyway.

Meanwhile, hot off the press I've just seen a copy of a FSW internal notice confirming that GoAhead have bought Camborne, Summercourt and Truro depots, together with Truronian Coaches.

The notice also reconfirms that GoAhead will be the new operator for Truro P&R.

Isn't this sort of news meant to be announced publicly by First at the same time as to staff, because it can have an effect on the stock market? Perhaps less so the depot sales (given the depots are already mentioned as being closed), but certainly the sale of Truronian.

I expected them to buy Summercourt but the purchase of Truro and Truronian, and Camborne, is a bit of surprise. That said, when I saw the Go South West were becoming a Flix contractor, a thought did cross my mind ;)

You’re correct I have driven ex London fleet buses and it was weird not seeing a manual ramp at the front. So yes this could be an issue. But as the GoCornwall company motto goes ‘No One Cares’

Go South West were struggling with maintenence before 20 extra school contracts were gained plus Truro School and compeditive services. Maybe with these extra maintenence bases things will improve.

The sale of Truronian is a bit of a surprise and a shock, considering First’s current spending spree of purchasing small coach companies around the UK (they’ve just got a foothold in Wolverhampton today). It also means that two long established companies now fade away to the Go-Ahead group - First Kernow (Western National) and more locally Truronian).

If they’ve acquired Camborne I wonder if that means they will have a proper Cornwall operation with full engineering support, rather than having to send everything across the Tamar regularly.

I wonder if they will consolidate any existing locations and try and have some proper depots rather than running from council yards with rolls of gaffer tape.

It’s a shame they split from GSC because that operation is so much better. I was told when I worked there it was because GSC got sick of all the money going to Plymouth so they separated it. I think as they are tuping most of Truornian that maybe all the engineering will come across too and maybe like you said it may become a proper operation. But business wise I imagine they might stick with corserv until 2028. I’m shocked first sold up Truronian I know that some flix drivers refuse to work for go ahead as the one I spoke to has a claim against them for negligence. The thing is Plymouth is their baby and Cornwall comes second to them.

Plymouth Citybus and Go South Coast have always been separate entities within Go-Ahead, so I think you've been misinformed.

Ok here goes...

When they had the original TfC contracts in 2020, it was realistic to have a selection of council depots and yards with a level of running repairs and to cycle the vehicles through Milehouse for major work, inspections and MOTs. Clearly, when you then take on work for another 60-70 vehicles, it simply isn't feasible to do that and you have a level of critical mass to pay for depot facilities. Therefore, it was always my expectation that they would obtain depot facilities in order to do manage a much larger operation than before.

Similarly, it was obvious that First's Truronian operation couldn't sustain the Truro depot (hence they announced its closure) and they would have to find a smaller base e.g. another operator or commercial vehicle workshop. They've now taken the view, and it's fairly sensible, that having a small coach operation geographically distant from anywhere will be more hassle to manage than it's worth so have taken up Go Ahead's offer.

As I said, I suspected that Go Ahead would be interested in Summercourt given the rustic premises next door that they had from Travel Cornwall. Camborne is much more of a surprise - thought that might be retained by First and redevelop the entire site. Truro, I thought, would be offloaded.

The irony is that First/Western National tried to usurp Plymouth Citybus twice and has ultimately been swallowed up.

When I worked there we came under GSC my contract even said it then they created Go South West
Plymouth Citybus Ltd has never been part of Go South Coast Ltd. It's an England and Wales registered company in its own right with its own O licence.

The company accounts going right back to the sale to GoAhead state that the immediate owner of PCB is GoAhead Holdings Ltd.

The only connection with GSC was when Andrew Wickham briefly moved over to be the PCB MD.

Just viewed the Gov.co site for operator licences under Plymouth Citybus and noticed that as well as existing sites at Milehouse and Cornwall they have added Camborne (45), Summercourt (45) Falmouth(25) & Truro (35) i.e the First depots/outstations.

Remarkably up to date for DVSA!

The full timetable book showing the new reduced services has now been published

Hopefully they will print more than half a dozen copies this time!
Route 7 (Sennen Cove - St Just) has been omitted from the timetables, map and index. Either it's being withdrawn (where's the registration cancellation?) or it's been forgotten. If as I suspect the latter then that's very lax for a route that was reintroduced last November on a use-it-or-lose-it basis.

A couple of years ago the 16/16A was omitted from the book.

Isn't any proof-reading undertaken?

The timing point at Mousehole on the 6 is shown as being The Parade. I thought that the route was being truncated back to the Old Coastguard or has that changed with the acquisition of the ex Preston Mercs?

The Parade is the Old Coastguards, just an unusual way to describe it

The Parade also covers the area where buses generally set down and pick up just before the car park, rather than the impractical pair of stops just beyond the Coastguards, so in practice a more accurate description.

I was amazed to note that the stop at Devoran slip has the new timetables on display already for the 32 32A and 66.

Almost every stop has the new timetables and has caused a lot of confusion.
Beggars belief really that timetables have been posted in some cases at least three weeks before the change. Usual practice is a day or two before.

Apart from the complete omission of route 7 from the timescale book I've picked up some errors on the map.

Route 1/1A is shown on its existing routing rather than reflecting that it's now diverted via route 5/5A. Paul and Newlyn Coombe are therefore incorrectly shown as having no bus service. In fact Paul no longer even appears on the map.

The route 17 timetable confirms that the route will continue to serve Crowlas Chy-an-Gweal Estate contrary to what appears on Bustimes.org and Traveline SW. However the map shows the route operating direct via the A30, so it's anyone's guess what will actually happen.

The above all continues to confirm to me that GSW's publicity and marketing continues to be in a league of its own in the GoAhead Group - and not in a good way!

Talking about the 17, I see there is a 90 minute gap on weekday afternoons now, 1400-1530 from Penzance and 1500-1625 from St Ives. Presumably the buses go off to do a school run at this time

You're right! That's appalling. All it's going to do is push people on to the train, which in the summer is already at capacity. It looks like what's happened is because unlike the currently half-hourly service the new hourly service no longer coincides with school finishing times so has to be shifted by 30 minutes.

I see on social media there's much concern that staff that currently use the T1/T2 to get to Treliske hospital for start of shift at 07:00 aren't going to be able to on Saturdays anymore because the first two buses from Camborne are being withdrawn. The first arrival will now be 07:02.

So many timetables are school and college driven, you only have to look at the 87 and the 14:35 from Newquay ending at Threemilestone of all places just so it can slip into the college leaving 2 hours without a direct Truro service for most places on this route. Not great in my opinion.

These are issues for Cornwall Council to solve, especially the buses for Treliske Hospital staff.

With St Ives to Penzance it is regularly hourly ex Penzance Saturdays and School Holidays. Depending on passenger numbers over Easter, perhaps consideration will be given to a summer uplift in the timetable.

Yes indeed, I'm aware of how it works and hopefully the council will act quickly.

The main passenger flow at that time on Saturdays and school holidays will be from St Ives, not Penzance. As I say, it will just push people onto the train. Apart from a change of trains at St Erth the journey time is similar and the non-discounted day return fare not much more than the bus fare. We will clearly have to see if there's going to be any summer uplift.

On the 2/3, despite hearing from "sources" that there'll be guaranteed connections at Helston, often with the same bus, there's no indication of this in the timetable. Also, the Truro & Falmouth MP has stated that although through tickets will be available the cheapest way to do a return journey across Helston will be to buy a £9 day ticket. This does very much suggest that the route has been deliberately split to double up on revenue for journeys across Helston. The same could be said for the 4/4A and 17 although in this case I think it's a sensible split.
