I guess what I'm trying to say is that it was a very straightforward move from being a cabin crew on a Thomas Cook plane to being a train crew member. Lots of readily transferable skills and the like. It's not too much of a leap. The barriers to entry are pretty low.

To become a bus driver, the barriers are higher. For a start, 25% of adults don't have a driving license. Then there all the other reasons such as working hours, possibly involving childcare. If it were simply about any job, you'd question why you'd work in hospitality for minimum wage, or in retail when it's so precarious? Why are people working nights in distribution centres for Amazon when bus companies are crying out for drivers at much higher wages?

Sorry if you think I'm being harsh. Really, I'm not but I just think you're oversimplifying it a bit.
Don't worry, I get what you're saying

You certainly want to become a bus driver rather than because you have to, many want to because of the freedom and you don't have managers breathing down your neck, and that well paid jobs are few and far between in Cornwall

Tho, some want to learn the new skills and do something different, all a matter of ambition really

Ambition for those who have the freedom to do so. As I say, you can automatically rule out 25% of people. Of the remainder, things like childcare just don't allow it. It's really why operators have been struggling to recruit anyway.

Didn't Kernow themselves have a driver shortage for a good while, not as bad as TfC but didn't have as many as they wanted

Many don't like the confrontation with angry or aggressive customers, being in a customer service role myself I know how that feels like and its not always pleasant, although I always try and remember the friendly and nice customers at the end of my shift

Also like you said the length and types of shifts put many off, and the shear amount of traffic on the roads put many in particular inexperienced drivers off

Has PCB been granted its new operating centres in Cornwall yet? There's nothing showing under their O licence details on line.

If it doesn't happen in the next few days they won't be operating any more than they currently do from Sunday week.

How many extra do they actually need? The Corserv place at Scorrier but where else? OTS, Hopleys and Summercourt will be largely ok?

do Cornwall council have authority for these sites? Do Cornwall council have operators discs that are being used? PCB will be totally maxed out now as they have 310 discs, currently use 180, new services are 120, plus the coaches and private hire

Edit... just looked for myself. Cornwall council don’t have authority for these sites neither for the levels required.
Interesting to see where council workers who take their vehicles home live on their licence

It's PCB that needs authority to use the sites as operating centres, irrespective of who owns the locations.

If drivers take their buses home then these will need to authorised as PCB operating centres.

it depends what o licences are being used. If they’re using council licences then it would be the council who need the authorities not citybus.

The online site was always pretty dire in terms of updates and I suspect it's worse then ever now.

Does Cornwall council hold an O licence for PSVs?

I'm sorry but I don't think there is any suggestion that they are operating on someone else's discs.

I'm with @carlberry on this one. I can't imagine that PCB have not made the necessary applications and that DVSA isn't processing them. They are just a bit slow in posting them online.

We can scoff with derision at some of the decisions of CC in terms of fantastical new services like hourly to St Mawes, or that to travel from Veryan to Truro (as has been the case for years) needs a change at Tregony, or running buses across open moorlands. However, some levity please. This is a major and highly professional operator - not some two bit outfit with a tarnished reputation.

Pcb have just announced all services to go to Saturday times from Monday until further notice. Unsure if this applies to Cornwall too as they don’t have separate Facebook

This launch of a new network is looking increasingly ridiculous with what is going on.

Surely existing timetables should continue, with Kernow staying on winter timetables, and subsidised timetables staying as they are. Go Cornwall can still take over routes but run them to existing timetables.

Can't see them or Kernow operating under the current frequencies for much longer especially with Schools shut from Friday and the Uni suspending lectures, caught 4 busses today, 2 U1s, and 2 T1s and all had barely double figures on it, for 2 of Kernow's busiest routes it doesn't look good, especially for the late night U1s if people are advised not to visit pubs, a reduction in service is inevitable if things continue, Truro was a ghost town when I visited earlier

I don't think anyone is suggesting PCB didn't make the application ASAP. It's not DVSA that approves O licence applications. It's the TCs directly. It's certainly a much more complex process than merely "processing" applications. I know from personal experience that they do not guarantee any lead time for considering applications, but it's generally between two and four months. That an operator has won work which requires a new site by a certain date holds absolutely no sway with them.

Are the Penzance area services seriously going to be run from Scorrier? That's a ridiculous amount of dead running.

with First going commercial I’d expected this to be withdrawn barring the 1 pre 9am journey in each direction, which first aren’t running
Yes I think the 56 has been trimmed however expect this to be on from October because pre these tenders the A5 was only commercial in peak season

The reason town centres and city centres are ghost towns is everyone is panic buying and stripping the supermarkets, makes me mad. I suggest tendered service cuts depend on the council agreements

Indeed toilet roll and soap are like gold dust at the moment, Cornwall will probably get a Saturday timetable in the worst case scenario but won't be for a bit yet, depending on how many drivers can work especially with the kids off from Friday

Apologies - I meant the applications to the TC and the DVSA taking them in and posting them online.

However, stand by what I say. Just because they haven't been posted online doesn't mean that they aren't being processed. Wait to see if it's an issue. Bit like the Mousehole Harbour/no small buses debate.

Oh absolutely they were. The journeys PCB are running are not serving the harbour despite the registered timetables showing they were going to. Conclusion: no suitable buses.

An alternative conclusion is that sourcing suitable buses was a viable option under the original tender. Following FK's registrations and corresponding reduction in TfC provision it could be that having a non-standard vehicle for such a small number of journeys became financially unreasonable. The sensible solution might then be to renegotiate the requirements of the service - hence the change.

Do you really think that the M6 Sunday and evening services as originally envisaged weren't going to the harbour?
The timetables on Traveline showed them going to the harbour. However, clearly GCB had no suitable buses in mind as they'd be using them for the couple of trips they're left with.

Cornwall Council live in the same rarified world as the International Olympic Committee i.e. up their own back alleyways, so something so obvious and compelling won't happen. They'd no doubt cite possible breach of contract, I'd cite pig-headedness and a lack of intelligence, emotional or other. Today's weekly edition of the Packet free paper, which is mostly Falmouth/Helston based but now ventures into Redruth/Camborne. Truro and Penzance to a degree, is full of woes related to coronavirus, with jobs temporarily or permanently axed, entertainment and hospitality venues closing, even hospital visiting hours at Treliske cut. But with consummate bad timing, there's a piece about the Park and Ride at Truro being extended three hours into late evening from 30th March, just when any demand has ceased to exist. What message does that send out? If the press release had appeared a week earlier, it might just about have been understandable, but there's no excuse now.

TfL is introducing Saturday services across its 8500-bus network from Monday, entailing hasty rescheduling by operators and variations to the route contracts by TfL. If they can manage it (the bus contracts team is surprisingly very small) I'm sure Cornwall Council can...
