So what are the chances of GCB getting hold of a suitable bus (or two) within the next four weeks that'll be able to access Mousehole Harbour on the M6, and not have to be turned at the Old Coastguard Hotel? The situation last summer with Kirst Kernow not having sufficient serviceable buses for Mousehole only made the letters pages of the local newspaper without attracting more media interest, but if GCB weren't able to fulfil that element of their new contract not only they, but Cornwall Council, would attract opprobium, quite correctly in my view. There is still time for alternative arrangements to be made: Euro V1 needn't be a smokescreen(!)

Shouldn't be too long until timetables are released, PCB said on Twitter early to mid March, and Kernow normally release theirs 2 or 3 weeks before the standard May and September timetable changes so should be near enough the same time?

Although we still have traveline anyway in the mean time

I can't quite bring myself to believe that PCB haven't planned ahead for what they'd use to Mousehole.

Anyway, here's my solution. There are a number of original shape slimline 7.1m and 7.8m Euro IV Solos for sale just from a Google search. We know they will fit Mousehole. There is an approved Euro VI retrofit package for them.

One bus after arriving at PZ goes to operate route 8 for the whole day and the other arriving at 0753 becomes the third bus in the cycle on route 16. Either can operate the late evening journeys on the M6.

Sorted! :)

Can't believe they didn't have buses in mind either for the M6, I'm quite a great supporter of the new contract and of GCB but that was a stupid decision really

With all the Mousehole sized buses around, I wonder why Kernow didn't buy a few to bolster their fleet when they still had the CC work

I’m on holiday in Penzance from 27th April until 4th May so very pleased that the new timetables etc will all have been in operation for a good month before I am down there. It’s ticketing that I will be more concerned with. Considering First Kernow’s already expensive ticketing and the way the price of the the Ride Cornwall ticket has risen in recent years I do wonder if the County Council will be able to get FK to co operate on any multi operator weekly ticket.

Currently a First Kernow Day Ticket is a very expensive £15 but their 7 Day Ticket is quite reasonable at £30.
A Plymouth City Bus Go Cornwall Ticket is £9 for a Day Ticket and £32 for a 7 Day ticket.
The Ride Cornwall multi operator Day Ticket is now £18 with no 7 Day version available. When I was last in Cornwall only 18 months ago a Senior Railcard discount was available for a Ride Cornwall Ticket and I think it only cost me about £9.70 a day but as well as the price increase the Railcard discount has also been removed.
It could be quite an expensive week travelling around if I have to purchase lots of separate bus tickets. Fortunately I will have an 8 Day Devon and Cornwall Rail Rover which I am using from Tiverton Parkway to Penzance as part of my return rail fare from Nottingham.

I suspect too that despite that Facebook post by a supposed 'insider' GCB do have this in hand. It'd be exceedingly disappointing if that didn't prove to be the case.

It even looks like the Travelodge might be open by then, which seemed unlikely to the casual, but interested, observer a month ago!

It appears your visit is well timed for the operator/timetable changes, but probably a tad too early for the supposedly extremely radical (in a good way) new fare structure on buses in Cornwall which forms a significant part of the millions in money that the government is ploughing in, My local councillor for Penzance Central (not part of the governing coalition, either) says this should start 'in May.' My guess is Whit weekend, but it's only a guess. I think you'll find a day ticket will come down in price considerably. I know the intention for single fares, for instance, should incorporate a cross-Penzance fare, on the 16 or Ai7 of £1 and I believe the definition of PZ extends for a fair way beyond the town. Believe me, a fare like that hasn't existed in the 32 years I've been living here!

Cornwall is a pilot area for a 4 year government funded scheme for cheaper bus travel. May is the start day I’ve been told. The government funding is to compensate commercial operators loss of income resulted by reduced fares. Citybus point to point fares are higher than first if comparing similar distances. Both report record passenger numbers so it’s obviously not putting off travellers. £15 for a day ticket is good value if used to it’s potential, considering at present can get from bude to lands end and everywhere in between.

I myself, will be on Holiday due the second two weeks in May. I will be using the Freedom of Devon & Cornwall Rail Rover. With all these changes, I am really looking forward to my Holiday in May.

Will the sub-contracted operators don Go-Ahead livery, or stay in their own colours with 'brought to you by Go-Ahead' or some such slogan? If the former, any Cornwall-based paint shops will be very busy in the next few weeks!

I think I read somewhere that a vehicle in OTS' fleet has been painted red, but I've not seen any photos of it yet. Their recruitment advert is certainly very Go Gornwall Bus-esque red, yellow and white though!

You mean the Premier Inn? It's opening in four weeks time.
Yep, confusing Premier Inn with the Travelodge that may or may not be built to coincide with the new Penzance Heliport next Spring. I knew the projected opening date (already postponed once) but it looked to be unfeasible earlier this year: until Cornwall Council decided they'd turn a blind eye to closing off a traffic lane for great periods of most daytimes to allow the contractors to do what they wished.

Come on guys. One post on FB and there's all this.... I'm sure that Go Ahead will have the requisite vehicles for the various services. Just because they haven't the vehicles now doesn't mean they won't in 4 weeks' time.

The 0635 M6 could head onto the 5 afterwards.

I’ve just had a chance to look briefly through the Traveline timetables for Go Cornwall and First Kernow from 29 March. There’s a lot to digest. I know there might be changes but I feel rather as though I have moved from the rest of the UK’s cuts, cuts, cuts to a parallel universe where money is no object….

Looking at the main points that I have found, not counting issues such as how Go Cornwall is going to run the Mousehole journeys:

· The Lizard. At the moment First run the L1 from Redruth to Helston and Lizard every two hours, with more in peaks, plus an L2 from Truro to Helston and on to Coverack fairly infrequently. From March Go Cornwall are going to run the 34 from Redruth to Helston and Lizard hourly and the 36 from Truro to Helston every two hours (and a separate 36A to Coverack). Meanwhile First are going to run an L1 from Truro (not Redruth) to Helston and Lizard, pretty much hourly during the day but with very little at school or peak times, and it will mainly miss out Ruan Minor. Can this possibly be justified?

· Newquay to Padstow, it looks as if First’s A5 will continue every 90 minutes, although with a slightly varied timetable from 5 April, while Go Cornwall will run the 56 hourly in competition. Even, largely, following the same variations and many journeys at exactly the same times. If it is right it is madness!

· Newquay to Truro. It looks as if First’s 85 will continue to run every 90 minutes while Go Cornwall will run a competing 85 every hour. First will also continue to run the 86 every hour. On the main route First’s 91 will continue every half hour, but seems to lose some peak hour journeys at key times – unless I’m missing something. What’s going on here then?

· The 47 from Camborne to Portreath, Redruth, St Day and Truro, currently hourly by First. Go Cornwall are going to run this hourly from 29 March but First will continue to run the whole route hourly except for the section between St Day and Truro. It does look like these will be reasonably evenly spaced, but if this wasn’t economic before then how is it now?

· In my view the maddest one looks sane at first glance. At the moment First run the 24 and 25, each hourly, between St Austell and Fowey. The 24 (from Mevagissey) arrives at Fowey at 11 past each hour and departs at 45 while the 25 (from Newquay) arrives at 40 and departs at 15. A nice half hourly service between St Austell and Fowey and they interwork at Fowey. Going forward – exactly the same. Except it isn’t. The 24 will still be First while the 25 will be Go Cornwall. So will there be a bus sitting at the terminus (where there’s not much room) for about 35 minutes every half hour? Good news for the pub there perhaps – but it’s a steep walk down to the town to a café! On the face of it the 25 then has 36 minutes in Newquay too, but maybe this will interwork with something else.

· I do like some of the improvements. The 95 two hourly from Truro to Wadebridge, Camelford and Bude, and the 10 (why not 96?) from Wadebridge to Port Isaac, Camelford and Launceston also two hourly. I really hope they attract custom. On the other hand there doesn’t appear to be anything going forward between Bodmin and Camelford like the existing 55.

· I am also pleased to see the A3 and A4 starting earlier this year. Let’s hope the weather improves and people use them.

· Some early or late journeys on commercial First routes like the M6, T1, T2 and U4 are shown by Go Cornwall but the First timetables haven’t been updated to reflect their withdrawal – if they are withdrawn…

Going to be an interesting year in Cornwall. I will try and visit!

No justification needed. Commercial services can be registered wherever and whenever an operator determines. There's no obligation to serve any particular location.

However in this case both Ruan Minor and Kuggar get a better service than they have today via GCB route 34.

The U1 gets an extra journey Monday to Friday in the morning, the 06:10 service from Falmouth Moor to Truro, with a return service at 07:10, will replace the current 06:20 service from Falmouth to Penryn Campus, which goes over to GCB

No timetables yet for GCB/OTS Falmouth services, and any potential new Kernow services apart from the new U1 service

I wasn't suggesting there was anything improper or untoward. Just that I do not believe the potential traffic can possibly justify three buses every two hours during the day instead of one!

I'm from Nottingham so it may be different in Cornwall but I can't see competition being good for contracted routes that First seems good enough to register commercially, but Cornwall council feel the need to contract.
Back here, Yourbus went and won many Derbyshire County Council contracts that used to be operated by the likes of Doyles and Gills, who do not exist because of this. The Eastwood Town Service was operated by Doyles under contract until Yourbus registered a commercial version, so Nottinghamshire withdrew funding and the two operators battled it out with no benefits to the citizens of Eastwood.
I know I have gone totally off topic but I fear that commercial versions of a contracted route will not go well and won't benefit Cornwall, tourists or residents.

citybus can’t be paid the subsidy if 75% or more of the route is the same. Who knows First May have another card up their sleeve for this route!

So will there be a bus sitting at the terminus (where there’s not much room) for about 35 minutes every half hour?

no. Can’t be done without obstructing two roads. Traffic can’t pass to get down the slip or the road behind where the stop is whilst a bus is there. At present when the 25 is 2 hourly on a Saturday there is a 34 min wait in fowey every 2 hours. We are instructed to go up and park on Hansen drive out of THe way.

On the face of it the 25 then has 36 minutes in Newquay too, but maybe this will interwork with something else.

Currently works the 58 in that 30 mins. Haven’t looked at the new 58 timetable to look if that’s still the case.

The 95 two hourly from Truro to Wadebridge,

first have registered the 213 I believe to run two round trips to Wadebridge between college runs.

can't see competition being good for contracted routes that First seems good enough to register commercially, but Cornwall council feel the need to contract.

as above where 75% or more of the routes overlap the subsidy can’t be paid. First registering commercially along tendered routes will mean citybus Losing their subsidy for those routes.

Ah, right you are! Yes, I agree. As with all such competition where there is over-provision it'll sort itself out in the end.

The registrations have all gone through on the VOSA list.

It seems that Service 96 (Wadebridge - Delabole, via. St. Minver, Rock & Port Isaac) is being replaced with Service 10 (Launceston - Wadebridge, via. Hallworthy, Camelford, Delabole, Port Isaac, Rock & St. Minver) which will offer more journeys than Service 96 currently does. At the same time there are entries for Service 11 / 11A / 11B / X11 (Plymouth - Liskeard - Wadebridge - Padstow) the effect of which will be:

- withdrawl of Service X11
- withdrawl of Service 11B: addition of Service 10 between Bodmin Parkway and Wadebridge Bus Station

From that it looks to me as if through journeys to & from Plymouth will be possible for destinations on the route of Service 96 (soon to be Service 10): the timetable of Service 10 provides for, I think, 7 journeys per day running roughly every 2 hours Mondays to Saturdays (except Public Holidays) only. The timetable for Service 10 is on TravelineSW but the new TT for Service 11 is not. Meanwhile Service 12 (Bude - Plymouth) is withdrawn from the Callington estates but some journeys on Services 79 & 79A will be extended in lieu.

There are changes to the routes and / or timetables of existing PCB / GCB routes 70, 71, 72, 73, 77, 78 & 89 as well.

HTIOI,
Dave
