Correct me if I am wrong but was it true that on some Sundays GNER used to start from Finsbury Park instead of Kings cross?

Did GNER ever stop on the southbound journey at Finsbury Park and then on to KGX?

I'm pretty certain I remember GNER terminating at Finsbury Park on certain occasions, usually relating to engineering works.

This has happened before. IIRC there were temporary stop boards (I think that's the correct term) for Class 91+MK IV sets and HST's at FPK. They're possibly still in position.

Yes that has happened.

The automatic announcements at Leeds used to annouce the train to " _____ " calling at "Doncaster, Peterborough and _____ " until someone decided they should add Finsbury Park to the announcers database!

Makes sense getting you as close to the capital as possible, instead of turfing onto buses twenty miles out at Stevenage or even Peterborough (76mi). With Finsbury Park's underground connections and bus station next door onward connections are already there.

Went to London late 2008 and the train back on Sunday evening was going from Finsbury Park, think they let people onto the underground free at KGX.

Think they still did the "announce platform at last minute" thing at Finsbury Park as well, there were at least a couple of 91's in at the time.

Still happens occasionally.

Hull Trains have done it a few times already this year. Seems they've had a choice between a full service to Finsbury Park, or a very limited one to Kings Cross.

its a shame that they don't stop more east coast trains on the southbound to KGX as the trains crawl into KGX between FPK and KGX. By holding it at FPK, the northbound train can vacate the platform and the southbound can speedily move in. Journey times may even be quicker!

revenue protection may be an issue, as people may board with oyster PAYG and sit in first class and the train guard would not be able to do a full ticket check.

Going way back, there was once a service from ????? to Waterloo. It was to connect with Eurostar and used the NLL to get around London. I'm seem to recall that this service stopped at Finsbury Park. May have been before GNER.

A service from where?

Finsbury Park is an excellent interchange if you are able bodied. However they are making modifications for disabled passengers.
I can be leaving the FCC service and be on a southbound victoria line in less than 30 seconds. I think the victoria line would reach Kings cross first anyhow.
But by the time you factor walking from KGX FCC platform to the LU platform the time you would have saved at FPK is defo. worth it.

I recall vague details of that service.

Didn't it start from Edinburgh, and called at certain East Coast stations to pick-up only, and, as you say, went round the North London line to Waterloo to connect with the Eurostar services?

But I can't remember if it called at Finsbury Park, and never managed a trip on it because it was limited to Eurostar ticket-holders only.

Going further back into the 1970s, Finsbury Park was regularly used by a "budget-price" train to Newcastle called "The Highwayman". It was intended to compete price-wise with motorway coaches, and took about 6 hours to get from Finsbury Park to Newcastle. It must have been routed on the slow lines wherever they existed and visited most loops on the two-tracked sections!

IIRC, it left Finsbury Park about 10am, and presumably used that station to begin/terminate its journey because of lack of platform availability at Kings Cross. Or perhaps the then Eastern Region did not want such a train, composed of Mk 1 coaches and a Cl.40 at the head to sully the image of prestigious high-speed trains at The Cross!

I seem to remember it lasted only for a couple of seasons or so!

Wasn't a public stop (last was Peterboro' IIRC), perhaps a crew change?

6 hours? You sure it didn't reverse and do some of the slow lines more than once for a laugh? :D
