I heard that GNER was once trying to convert some sleeper Mk. 3s to day coaches, and apparently they had oval windows?

Anybody have any pics or information on this?

Don't think the idea ever progressed beyond the drawing board.

If I remember correctly and from the artists impressions at the time the plan was to just leave the 4 small windows on what was the corridor side of the sleeper as any attempt to open out or cut new window apertures would've weakened the body structure so the plan was to have the seats angled on this side in a single seat configuration and 2+2 seating on the other side.

If I remember correctly the oval windows had already wakened the body to such an extent that the coach was not allowed to be rail hauled and had to be taken by lorry!

It was a good idea but because the construction of the mark 3 sleepers was different from the 'day' coaches it wasn't viable.

This was when GNER were finding carriages for the project to lengthen the HSTs to 9 carriages yes? Wiki says they changed to use carriages from XC HSTs when Virgin withdrew them

A lot of work was done on the Mk3 SLEP conversion but structurally it proved to be a non-starter. It was worthwhile investigating the possibility of doing the conversion, but unfortunately GNER had a propensity for announcing things before they had thoroughly investigated the project's viability. Remember the order for tilting trains to supplement the fleet?

I remember:

2 tilting trains in service by 2000 (I think it was).

Parkway station near Potters Bar (for the M25)
Parkway station near Doncaster
Parkway station on the outskirts of Edinburgh

They had lots of ideas that never came to anything. Converting Sleepers to normal coaches was something that actually had a small amount of actual work done.
