Hi I was waching Harry potter and the deathly hallows part2 and at then end of the film I noticed some mk2s in gner livery. They went barrier coaches as the had seats in them.
I was just wondering were are these coaches now and who owns them and why didn't they just use a east coast set rather than using some mk2s with the red gner stripe on them . Thanks

I would guess (not seeing the film yet) that they could have been used to block out any movements from trains coming into the station behind them.

I too have been wondering what the score was with the GNER blue liveried mark 2s in the latest Harry Poter film: They're actually seated carriages as opposed to barrier vehicles as hstmatt says, but the private owner number series numbers that they carry (In the 997XX series IIRC, I think one was 99721) don't tally up with any mark 2 air-con vehicles.

The film used this rake on one side of the platform and the Pretendolino on the other side in order to mask the filming from the rest of the working station and as Yew says to keep other train movements out of shot, and I think it was done in an attempt to retain continuity between the early Harry Potter films and this newest one, which is a major criticism that has been levelled at many of the earlier HP films, as in the early films then-GNER operated mark 4 rakes were indeed used during filming at Kings Cross. Ironically though, in their quest for continuity the film makers have actually failed to accurately portray the nature of Britains' constantly changing railways, where GNER are no longer the operator of the East Coast in the unceasing TOC merry go round, and will be but a distant memory twenty years from now when that particular part of the film is set!

Clearly East Coast refused to provide any stock to sit in Kings Cross doing nothing, or were asking for too high a price, to cause this situation in the first place, as the unprototypical situation of GNER and Virgin liveried stock sitting at the same London terminus has also been created!

The coaches were actually from Carnforth - one (which was numbered 99716 in the filming) is actually 3416 and is apparently still in IC livery on the other side. I've no idea why it was numbered as 99716. One of the coaches was on view when I passed the WCRC depot on Monday.

Thanks for the clarification :) I had wondered whether a rake of knackered former Virgin mark 2s had simply been dragged out of storage and given a bit of a paint job to play their part in the film, or whether the livery had actually been digitally applied after filming on a computer somewhere, so it seems that my first suspicions would be closest to the truth.

I don't know why they bothered, tbh. They are already using the Virgin mk3 set in the background, so why not just get some old Virgin red and black mk2/mk3 coaches from somewhere instead rather than painting some IC mk2s to GNER livery?

It's quite surprising that they care about a relatively small detail like this when they are going so far as to using St. Pancras station as the exterior of King's Cross.

To conserve the fact that in every film it's been GNER liveried stock in the background at the station.

No doubt the Pretendolino was there as it required a smaller bag of gold to hire for the day than an EC set.

It's for continuity; the first and second films had GNER coaches in Kings Cross so they painted the Mk2s for a consistent set.

Good for them, at least they're making an effort to keep things consistent (especially in a basket case like our system).

Buy the DVD?

Funny how everything looks good in the old GNER colours.

So...

Who owns the rights/trademarks of the old GNER colours?

They probably aren't trademarked, and even if they were, the trademark could only be enforced if the filmmakers wanted to run an actual train service.

Given the amount of CGI in the films it seems strange to go to such lengths for this minor railway detail.

Don't get me wrong, its nice to see the "correct" public transport used in a film (many things I've watched have been "spoilt" by such niggles), but it won't be simple to move stock around on the UK railways like this, it must have cost them a few quid, and they could easily have CGI-d the details in separately.

Nice touch.

Seems odd that after going to that effort they still had the virgin set on the other side.. still, a nice effort.

It's obvious when you think how much money Virgin would have paid for the brand exposure.

It's hardly brand exposure really, yeah it is the Virgin livery but it is only shown for a few seconds and you can't see any logos..

It was probably there to provide supplies etc, and to block out other movements. The reason they chose to hire the WB64 set was most likely because a) it's well maintained and b) because it's from a well-known company.

Yes, to be introduced after Virgin Cross Country and Connex South Eastern get theirs.

Noooo, GNER are waiting for their Track Access proposal to be approved for services to Cleethorpes, Harrogate and from Hull to Liverpool via the Calder Valley, so if they are getting new stock for this I'd expect the CSRE Polaris or more LHCS/180s.

I am guessing you haven't noticed that GNER no longer exist, and haven't for quite some time?

Don't spoil it!

Now somone's spolied it anyway...

In effect GNER services where taken over by National Express and they have now been taken over by a company owned by the goverment called Directly Operated Railways who brand the services as 'East Coast'.

The GNER name was then baught from the old pearent company Sea Containers Ltd. and is now being used for a potential OOA from KX again.

hi does any one kno f we are getting any new gner trains for the future ?

I think there may have been some sarcasm in the responses there :P

GNER do no exist anymore the ECML is now operated by basically the government. Franchise is to be let in 2013 now i think.

East Coast who currently operate the ECML franchise will not be getting any new stuck. But some of the Intercity Express trains (IEP) will be replacing HSTs on the ECML later this decade.

Noooo, no sarcasm at all!

The ICEC Route (GNER, NXEC, EC) Etc. Should be getting new stock under the IEP Programme, but it's up in arms at the minute as to what is actually happening with that.
