I was told at Manchester Piccadilly yesterday that scratch off Wayfarers will not be sold at stations after the end of this month. None of the scratch offs they had were dated beyond 2013. Rochdale station has already stopped selling scatch offs and had bagged their remaining stock for return to TfGM

The Virgin staff at Piccadilly were unsure whether guards would be able to issue Wayfarers on trains if you boarded at an unstaffed station. They referred to an internal notice which apparently suggested that Northern guards might be able to, but not other TOCs. They also believed that Northern will take over management of the Wayfarer from 1st August.

Does anyone working in the area have any definitive info ?

The instructions Northern offices should have received is that Wayfarers will be ticket machine based as of today, however, existing scratchcards should be sold until stocks are exhausted. Advantix machines will be able to sell them, but not TVMs.

There is stock out there with 2014 on.

The most recent ones I have bought from Whaley Bridge station booking office have only 2013 as a scratch-off year, so presumably these were produced after the decision to print them on normal stock was taken.

However, the fact you have to scratch off the one and only year seems a bit bizarre to me!

But despite the website saying "staffed train stations" "in the wayfarer area" let us not that anyone starting their journey where the full range is unavailable are entitled to the full range at the first available opportunity.

I've bought one from my local shop on a PayPoint a couple of weeks ago. It was a journey of discovery for the shop, but we eventually found it lurking in the menu system. Didn't print quiet right, with half the Wayfarer logo missing.

Quite a lot of interest on the trains and the RPIs on the Metrolink who took it away to show their colleagues. For me, it's easy to buy my ticket from the local shop as it's on the way to the station and we don't have a ticket office.

Are you sure about that? It's not true of West Yorkshire Day Rovers that include bus travel.

Does anyone have any updated news on the GM Wayfarer ticket availability on the train?

I have a Merseyside travel pass that covers me to Newton-Le-Willows. Ideally I would like to buy a Wayfarer on the Northern train to Stalybridge so I can continue my journey on the same train. Will this be possible between Lime Street and Newton-Le-Willows please? Or better should I be able to buy at the ticket office at Liverpool?

Yes, they can be bought onboard.

The conductor should be able to find it under the Rangers & Rovers menu on his machine, using code GM6. The ticket should print something like "GM WAYFARER".

The ticket office at Liverpool Lime St should be able to sell it, although whether they are happy to do so remains to be seen. Same instructions as to how it can be issued as above.

GM Wayfarers are supposed to be in Advantix (since July 21st), so Guards should be able to issue them.

Noted that GM wayfarers are valid on the Metrolink system (after 9.30 a.m. if Mon-Fri), but how will passengers be able to buy a ticket if their journey originates at a Metrolink station?
