Hello,

Am I able to buy a Greater Manchester evening rail ranger from Fast Ticket Machines and the orange and sliver tall machines (what are they called)?
Also can you buy them before 6:30? I need to catch a train at 6:32.

Thanks

I don't believe you can get any kind of GM Rail Ranger from any ticket machine in GM. Your best bet is to get it from a ticket office in advance, or maybe a friendly conductor. Not sure how easy it is to buy it outside GM.

Ticket machines don't sell tickets one minute before they can be issued. I once got refused a YP discount at 09:59, but got accepted at 10:01. A helpful ticket office person will sell you one before 6:30, an unhelpful one might refuse and say you could board a 6:29 departure.

They should issue it beforehand, they are not there to enforce the restrictions, but to advise you of them :)

Manchester Piccadilly will not issue one a second before 1830, which I found out from a very uncomfortable experience last year, which maybe partially due to the fact that there new ticket issuing systems print them as a "GREATER MANCHESTER RAIL RANGER" on the bottom and a "DAY EVNING RNGER" on the top. Unlike other systems most of which from memory print them as "GM Evening Rangers" and "Evening Ranger" on the top

I raised this subject before in the context of the machines at Vauxhall (which are standard so I assume it applies elsewhere) which won't offer an off-peak ticket until 09:30, meaning that any passenger using the system who is unaware of the rules but who is intending to travel just after 09:30 will only be offered an 'Anytime'. I happened to notice this morning that my ticket emerged from the machine stamped 'printed at 07:55 .....' just as, twenty feet above me, the 07:58 was departing. So, presumably, if I was turning up later I would not be able to purchase an off-peak ticket until 09:33 or so.
