Could someone confirm if I have a GM Wayfarer ticket and a day return, Grindleford to Sheffield, I could use the express services between Manchester and Sheffield, or am I restricted to the stopping service?

Yes, you can use the non-stop TPE or EMR services. Condition 14.3 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel (NRCoT) allows you to change from one ticket to the next, without stopping at the split station, when one (or both) of your tickets is a ranger. Non-stop splits can be prohibited by the terms and conditions of one of the tickets (this is the case for some West Yorkshire rangers IIRC), but the GM Wayfarer conditions don't mention any restrictions on non-stop splits.

You might struggle to buy this combination of tickets at Sheffield, because the ticket office there is notorious for making up their own rules. Northern ticket machines can now sell the Wayfarer to you, though.

The OP appears to be starting from the Manchester end, but you are correct that Sheffield ticket office refuse to sell the GM Wayfarer. There are no Northern TVMs at Sheffield either. Anyone starting there is best buying the Wayfarer from a PayPoint outlet - there is one in the Spar close to the station.

Unless you encounter (as I did - before joining a train which I chose NOT to join to avoid confrontation) a conductor who insists (and won't be convinced otherwise, not even after being shown a validity map) that a Wayfarer's validity ends at Hazel Grove.

Thanks everyone.
We will be using the GM Wayfarer ticket during the day for a bit of walking along the Hope Valley, then going into Sheffield to meet up with her sister later on in Sheffield as it is her birthday.
When we did this last time on a Northern day ticket, we had almost an hour to wait for our train home from Manchester as the Northern service from Sheffield arrived just after our service left for home.
So hoping this gives us less time in Manchester on a February evening.
