I'm planning a visit to the GWR in April. Due to the distance involved, I'm planning to make it a two day visit with a night away. Where is best to stay, Cheltenham, Gotherington or somewhere else along the line? Any recommendations for B&Bs to stay at in the area?

Sorry, no ideas about B&Bs.
Do you have your own transport? If so, be aware that Gotherington is footpath access only with virtually no parking on the lane (the old station is privately owned, obviously by a rail enthusiast) - and Winchcombe has little parking. Access to Racecourse station is from the Racecourse roundabout, annoying if coming from the north - which is also where the bus stops are.

By rail - Broadway is bus from Evesham, Winchcombe from Cheltenham.

Depending on how far you're willing to walk Cheltenham Racecourse is within walking distance of Cheltenham mainline station and so plenty of accommodation in Cheltenham.

By car, the best place to start is either Toddington or Cheltenham, both have free car parks (Winchcombe also has one, but it's very small and depending on the day of the week you might not get a space).
In terms of accommodation, there will be hotels and B&Bs in Broadway (probably quite expensive), at least one B&B in Toddington (pretty much next to the station), B&Bs (and probably at least one hotel) in Winchcombe (again, likely to be expensive), I know of at least one B&B near Gotherington (Pardon Hill Farm, a pleasant walk from the stations across a few fields) (beware, the village of Gotherington is some distance from the station!). There are plenty of accommodation options in Cheltenham, ranging from cheap hotels to expensive hotels etc.

As you'll have access to a car, it may be worth looking at staying somewhere slightly further afield. For example, if you're coming from the north east, the Premier Inn on the Evesham bypass may be convenient and cheaper.

I was also going to advise looking further afield to potentially save a fortune. Tewkesbury *might* be worth considering, but I have no experience of the town to speak of. I travelled through there on a Stagecoach Explorer day out many years ago, but that would be 15+ years back so whatever it was like back then would doubtlessly be different now!

I was also going to suggest Worcester or Gloucester as alternatives. Cheltenham would be best if it's affordable, and it's a nice place to explore. I need a full day to go on an urban explore, I remember last year I went through some nice places in Cheltenham but I was on a long cycle ride with a need to make a train out of Evesham so I didn't stop for long.

Certainly I recommend checking prices in Evesham, which for the record has some nice bits to it too. The area around the river is nice, I've got to go back there on a nice day for some more exploring.

Have a great time!

The fact that you have to emphasise that says it all!
Though to be fair I do agree, there are some nice parts to Evesham. Shame about the less nice areas... (To maintain a tenuous link to the topic of the thread, if you stay at the Evesham Premier Inn, you go through one of the nice bits to get to the town centre!)

Ultimately, I think Cheltenham is probably the most versatile place to stay, as there's a far greater range of accommodation etc.
