Back in the Dark Days of the Late 80's early 90's, when I first went to Salford Uni, I seem to remember the Glossop Hadfield non-gangwayed stock used to travel on from Pic and through Ox Rd, and on to Deansgate, just wondered if anybody else remembers this, as a colleague of mine says they have always terminated at P1 or 2 at Pic.

I always thought the Deansgate trains were worked by units off the Alderley Edge/Crewe services. I cannot recall any Glossop / Hatfield services going through but it is possible that some may have done in the peaks.

The non gangwayed stock you refer to were Class 304 units.

303s were gangwayed within the unit which is why I didn't mention them.

Really?

I thought that was after refurbishment, when they returned to Glasgow.
Or were they refurbished before they came south?

303048?

I have a memory of electric stock running to Deansgate and then parking up on a siding on the route to Sale before the Metro and new A56 (Near White City) came into being. I don't know if any originated from Glossop.

The Macclesfield (now Stoke) services always ran through to Deansgate, not sure about anything else though. I can't imagine the Glossop services doing that as they'd have had to cross the whole station throat for no good reason.

According to my 1994 P5 book 303048 was not refurbed so was never fitted with gangways. Believe it retained this status right through to withdrawal and eventual scrapping although it was originally going to be preserved. This didn't happen as the unit still had the original asbestos insulation / contamination which all other units had removed as part of the refurb program (source is wikipedia).

Also, near the bottom of this link it states that it was refurbed units that were transferred south.

303048 was transfered south, and North again. So that's the exeption then?

Did the 309s ever run to Glossop during their NWRR/FNW days? I recall the occasional 323 being substituted with a 305 towards the end (2000?) but never saw 309s on the service. I definitely went on a 309 to Hazel Grove because I sat in a 1st class compartment, and that was when there was only one booked diagram each weekday (the 17.xx to Birmingham NS and return).

Nope, the 309s were only used on the Crewe and Macclesfield/Stoke services. A few 304s and 305s did end up on the Glossop line though.

In the 1980's,on weekdays, after 1900, some services ran from Altrincham to destinations in the North Midlands, I used to be able to go direct from Navigation Road to Macclesfield to attend committee meetings and the train certainly carried on past there.

I've checked my BR timtables entirely from 1988-1991 and can find no Glossop trains that continue beyond Piccadilly.

but who remembers the 506's prior to 84?

I remember such classic stock existed of similarly type units in Manchester and in Liverpool, due to my advancing age. I also remember the "G" force when starting that was a nature of the very old style electric units that ran from Lancaster Green Ayre to Morecambe Promenade via Scale Hall.....which must have been the prototype for the suspension as fitted to the Class 142 Pacers.

I have spent some time on research since this thread was first posted, so this is why I am later than expected in giving a more fuller reply.

There would be no reason for these units ever to have progressed to Deansgate. I cannot trace any workings from the Hadfield/Glossop area to there after the change of power supply was implemented and there would have been much crossing of the lines from the junction at Ardwick to the through lines at Manchester Piccadilly.

It would have allowed DMU's from Hadfield/Glossop, should this have been allowed, to access the lines through Patricroft and through Altrincham, but there was no known demand for through running on either of these routes, especially since the closure of the Woodhead route, which could have carried freight to both of these two lines from South Yorkshire.

The only DMU units in those far-off days of the 1980's, which only stopped at Altrincham and Sale and then passed through Deansgate, was the Chester - Northwich - Manchester service, which used to hurtle past me at Navigation Road station , much to my annoyance, during the morning rush-hour.<(

Hi, 1st post. The Glossop trains wouldn't physically have been able to carry on to deansgate in the early 80s. The Glossop line was 1500v dc where as the msj&ar lines into Piccadilly were upgraded to 25kV ac in the mid 1970s!!

You can't PM yet, so, basically, it wasn't you who caused the reply etc to vanish. AJN's reaction (which I reported), obviously caused quite a stir, and I suspect it has been confined to history by deleting anything you wrote after 1105 today.

Fair enough. However there was no need for the thread creators response based on me having the audacity to scan read his post incorrectly!
