Well I saw the other thread about a glitch. (didn't want to go off topic on that thread so I started this one)

I don't know what happened here:
1024x575.resizedimage

This is a US route, I also had floating catenary on the GWML.
Note, I'm running it on a laptop (hence the low quality of the scenery) but I have no clue why this gantry is missing.

Just felt like sharing this here :P

EDIT:
23:00 on 12/01/2014
As noted below the issue was resolved with simple changes to the graphic settings.

Thanks

Have you changed the scenery detail slider in the options menu? Its one of the options that hasn't been implemented at all so most assets will disappear if you put it below 9. Set it to 10 and let us know if its fixed it.

I run TS2014 on an laptop too, runs slow as hell at times but is mostly pretty good with TSX enabled.

I'd agree with jon91...when running the game on my laptop with basically everything at min, scenery detail included, Temple Meads had floating PIS screens and most of the platforms were nothing but the mesh making up the structures. Made station calls look, well, odd!

I run that on my laptop too, and quality is not the best but it generally works...until now: When I start the game it says:
"Failed to start game; Mission Excusable."

What does that mean?!

Sounds like a file that the game needs to start up has corrupted, used to happen to me quite a bit but fingers crossed it hasn't done it in a while...

You might need to verify the game cache, that used to fix it whenever it happened to me.

Thanks all, changing the scenery density seems to have improved matters, and isn't such a hog on performance as I was expecting. :)

I have installed this game and wished I hadn't bothered now... the thing is I even paid for it rather than get it from Vuze or another site. I even bought the GEML (Greater Anglia) Ipswich-Liverpool St add-on, and the thing runs so slow and locks up. It's an HP laptop with over 2gb of memory.

Not impressed, and with Steam.com there appears to be no refunds. £50 gone, although equal to a London bus lane fine, it's the principle. These faceless US firms won't refund me either. AVOID

Hi

Did you check the tech specs before purchasing?

2gig RAM is quite low these days and laptops generally perform worse than desktops due to the integrated graphics chips.

What are the full specs of your laptop and how does it compare to those listed for the game?

So your system isn't up to the task, but you want everyone else to avoid it.

Mind you, although it does work on many laptops, they did warn you before you bought it.

Laptop versions of these chipsets may work but are not supported.

Hardly their fault, is it?

However, people have had it working quite happily on even the worst of systems by dropping all settings right down, then gradually building them up until they find a happy medium. There are people quite willing to help, should you actually want it.

It runs slow because you are using a Laptop.

The game says it requires 2gb memory at minimum. What are the rest of your specs? If you only have 2gb of memory (RAM) then I suspect you probably own a £300 or so Laptop which will not play a game such as Train Sim.

You will also note that RailSimulator don't support Laptops officially because they don't tend to be very powerful.

Send a polite email to Steam asking for a refund because you can't play the game on your system and they are likely to on a one-time-only basis.

Finally, have you got all your settings set to minimum along with TSX off?

(sighs) I'm running it on an HP Compaq desktop, I could add more memory to it as it has not got much... at the moment, I'm struggling to get from Liverpool Street to Bethnal Green - and that's without the usual 'overhead line damage' in real life

Therein lies the reason. That PC is way not up too scratch with Train Sim demands! It's not just the memory that is the problem, it's also the CPU and GPU both of which are way under what Train Sim needs.

Please can you decide if you are running a laptop or a desktop...it cannot be both!

Could you also post what your machine specs are (CPU, RAM (exact please, not just "over 2GB" which doesn't tell us if you have 3GB or 36GB...) and what graphics card you have, as we'll be able to give you more specific feedback with such information

I have a laptop AND a desktop, sadly, both could do with more memory. The processor is fine, an HP DC5800 is more than capable, especially running Windows 8. It is on the base 2GB RAM, I've ordered another 2GB DIMM from eBay. BTW I'm a PC engineer looking after Tribute and Avantix ticketing systems for quite a few TOCs such as FCC and GA, so I do know my stuff, so less of the patronism pls...<(

I ordered the game via download from Steam, so it's not like I bought it in a shop like GAME and got to read the system requirements  having run MS Train Simulator with no issues in the past, I just assumed this one would be okay regarding system requirements. It just locks up and boots me out.

I've deleted the cache file, taken the graphics down the the base 800x600 and taken all detailing off, but then it's like playing on an early Pentium90 as the graphics are awful...

The PC just needs a little more memory, thats all... it will be fine with 4GB I'm sure. I wrote AVOID in the heat of the moment

Agreed 2GB RAM is a little low so the extra will probably help. I ran on a laptop for some time which had a Core 2 Duo 2GHz, integrated graphics and 2GB RAM - it ran OK with low graphics settings but some of the more detailed routes like WCML used to just lock up as it exhausted the RAM entirely. I'd say GEML will be a similarly demanding route. A HP dc5800 can still have a multitude of processors so I cannot comment on that and Windows 8 doesn't prove anything really.

I am also a PC engineer so I'd have hoped that from a fellow IT professional, you'd know that vague details doesn't give us any real grounds to assist you...no patronism intended. I'd expect if you emailed the RSC (or whatever they are called these days) helpdesk they would ask for similar information.

I'm sure the information is there for the taking though, nonetheless. MSTS was far less demanding and required much less resources than Train Sim (what with being donkeys years old now)

That may be the best you are going to get with the spec as it is currently.

TS2014 is a lot more demanding than MSTS is/was.

If you looked on the Steam Store page, the game requirements are at the bottom of the page.

If you know it just needs more memory than why tell everyone else to avoid the game? I highly doubt that all you need is more RAM/Memory but if you think so then why bother asking here...

That may be the best you are going to get with the spec as it is currently.

My memory should arrive within the next couple of days... the PC I have was only a cheap and cheerful desktop I got from eBay and must be at least 5 years old which is getting on it IT terms... Time to invest and replace it, but like the Swecoin printers, I'll keep it going for a while yet

I ordered the game via download from Steam, so it's not like I bought it in a shop like GAME and got to read the system requirements

The requirements are there on the purchase page, as they would be for any title. Like I have previously said, not taking responsibility to read these is not the fault of anyone else. That isn't me being intentionally abrasive, it's just that using that excuse for digital content doesn't wash.

having run MS Train Simulator with no issues in the past, I just assumed this one would be okay regarding system requirements. It just locks up and boots me out.

You are comparing a program from 2001, approaching 13 years since release.

However, stick the memory in when it arrives and see where you are. Reducing resolution isn't a realistic solution I don't think. There are many advanced graphical settings within TS2014 which can be scaled back completely, and then raised in stages to find a happy medium.

For all we know, you could be running in TSX mode with full shadows, or an AA setting which is slowing things down. Although adding memory isn't a magical cure, I'm sure there may be a chance to at least getting it running reasonably.

@Darandio no, I've disabled practically every enhancement to the graphics, even running in 800x600 mode (windowed). If the requirement recommendation is 4GB and my machine is below that, then in most instances, memory may be all that's needed.

BTW I was actually referring to MSTS2013 which just doesn't need infinite resources to just about work (quite a parallel with the rail industry, ironically  )

I did like the ease of operating the train in TS2014, compared to some other simulators.

There's no such thing as MSTS2013.

MSTS is still the 2001 version.

Railworks became TS2012/13/14. Ever since the TSX upgrade in 2012; my machine has struggled with TSX on. I don't think performance has changed much between 13/14 although it is hard to know as it automatically upgrades to the newer version.

I'm in the same boat and did notice an improvement in performance between TS2012 and 2013, mainly due 2013 fixing the new lighting engine in TS2012 and stopping it from treating every light source as shadow casting...

TS2013-2014 has made sod all difference to me performance-wise.

I have checked my memory... I had 4Gb but as 4x1GB in each DIMM slot, so replaced one with the 2Gb one that came today... so I made a mistake, I did have 4Gb RAM all the time (running Win8)... so I am at the recommended requirement, if the game still runs like a dog I will demand a refund from Steam.

If anyone has any (sensible) advice, let me know what else I need to do.

What graphics card do you have?

My issue is down to the fact I have a budget card ( radeon 5450 I think).

I could replace it, but I don't really know what would be best for less than £150 bearing in mind I need to switch to NVidia to get MSTS back working in W8.

I have an NVidia card, I upped the RAM to 5Gb, still no joy. Steam won't refund me, so that's £50 gone as I bought the GEML add-on as well. Never mind. If it can't run on an HP dual-core desktop with 5Gb RAM, then there must be serious issues with the software. Perhaps the way it's linked into the Steam Cloud software, I never had these issues with MSTS (yes it's old but it works FFS)

I was going to get OMSI bus sim, should have done now  I would have saved £25...

I didn't know it was incompatible with Windows 8.1, I've deleted the temp folder, deleted the cache, re-installed, but computer says no.

Won't even run on my brand new HP ProBook with 6Gb RAM

(sighs)

My laptop is a HP too and it runs the game, although it can choke on more scenery intensive routes with GEML being particularly bad in this respect.

I have a feeling its something to do with with your laptop's graphics chip, does it have a dedicated graphics card or just integrated graphics?

For reference, my laptop has a dedicated AMD graphics card, 4gb of RAM and 2.8ghz AMD dual core processor. I've capped the framerates to 25 fps too so it runs a bit smoother.

So then, what nVidia card is it? Are you running 32 bit or 64 bit Windows? Steam probably won't refund you, the minimum specifications are visible prior to purchase, what "dual-core" processor is it (speed and model number), Steam Cloud has nothing to do with it.

Also it works fine with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

What spec is the ProBook, I assume you mean 6GB of RAM.

Never mind. If it can't run on an HP dual-core desktop with 5Gb RAM, then there must be serious issues with the software.

Yet people happily run it with far less resources. Of course it is the software, it would never be your issue, would it?

I never had these issues with MSTS (yes it's old but it works FFS)

And I am sure you could emulate Pac-Man on your system without issues. You might have issues with Call Of Duty: Ghosts however.

I bet you are thinking, why us he on about two completely separate programs that are years apart. Well, it's exactly what you are doing.

I was going to get OMSI bus sim, should have done now  I would have saved £25...

Which for many, is far more system intensive. Would we be having the same conversation if this didn't work? I get the feeling we wouldn't.

I didn't know it was incompatible with Windows 8.1

Wrong again.

Won't even run on my brand new HP ProBook with 6Gb RAM

Is this the same computer that wouldn't work before, but now with extra RAM. Or have we found another computer? As has already been said, it's likely an integrated chip which is the issue here, hence the warning on the purchase page before you bought.

Before you wade in with the 'pity me' because it's all someone else's fault, it's about time people took some personal responsibility. Throwing £50 around without even taking the time to find out if it will even work? Then throwing around several baseless 'facts' that are completely untrue.

That said, before I come under attack, there is nothing I would like more to actually see the route working for you. There is little worse than buying and owning something, then having no use for it.

Have you emailed RSC Support? There email is support@railsimulator.com be polite, send as much info as possible and they should be back to you within a week or so.

Are you using TSX or not?

What Nvidia card? I have an Nvidia card that came with my PC, it is only good enough for basic tasks such as browsing the web etc.

Steam won't do refunds. You accepted their policy when creating an account.

I was going to get OMSI bus sim, should have done now  I would have saved £25...

OMSI would only handle worse. Guaranteed.

I didn't know it was incompatible with Windows 8.1, I've deleted the temp folder, deleted the cache, re-installed, but computer says no.

Train Sim is compatible with Windows 8.1? I have it running perfectly fine.

Just because you have 6gb of RAM doesn't mean the game will work. There are other parts such as the CPU, GPU and hard disk space.

If you truly believe the game should work what actually happens when you boot it up, can you get into the sim?

As a seasoned Tribute engineer and a career at HP spanning several years before that, there's little more I can do - I have virtually replaced every component. It seems to be the Steam plugin that causes the aggro. The program updates via Steam so it's not like it can be installed standalone.

As Valve Games Inc. (Trading as Steam) are conveniently in Luxembourg with no telephone contact number and only email (which they have NOT responded to), there's little I can do. There's more chance of West Ham United playing in the Champions League than me getting this program to work, sadly... Even the most basic settings cause it to crash. I've cleared the cache, removed temp files (even hidden ones), Windows Defender reports no issues, and I don't want to remove virus scanners just to play a sim.

I have 1GB Video RAM on my card, 1TB hard disk, Core i3 CPU, 5GB RAM, yet I'm struggling like Katie Price in a spelling contest. Go figure

So I wiped it off. £50 gone, but I've got money. Thanks for your advice though ;)

Well excuse me for having £50 to spare. It's a shame the game was not compatible with my hardware setup and always crashed, but I just had to take it on the chin and move on, like you should.

Not baseless facts, if my complaint is based on the facts I've encountered, such as the game not working whatsoever on a common desktop with more than enough memory and hard disk space.

I was asking for advice for a resolution, having tried all the settings and permutations within the game to try and get the thing to work. Just drop it now. This is MY issue, not yours.

Without reading through the whole thread, have you reinstalled it?

What graphics card do you have? Make and model please! The fact it's 1GB is pretty useless to me!:p I have seen high end 500MB cards outperform loW end 1GB cards!!

If I read correctly, it's a laptop correct?

Have you had a look at the power options? I have seen laptops throttle CPU power to save battery!

Also, all your drivers, mainly for the graphics card, see they up to date?
