GLC - Derby and Derby - Rochester

I’ve been asked to find the cheapest PRIV fares for the following journeys:

Friday 14th September (ONE person)

Glasgow Central (GLC) – Derby single, using 1400 GLC – Birmingham New Street as far as Crewe, then 1707 Crewe – Derby.
The service from Glasgow calls at Carlisle, Oxenholme, Preston, Wigan North Western, Warrington Bank Quay and Crewe.
Splitting the tickets won’t be a problem if it makes it cheaper. I have found that splitting at Oxenholme, Preston and Crewe gives a total of £20.95.

Sunday 16th September (TWO people)

Derby – Rochester singles. To leave Derby some time around 1200, arrival time
at Rochester isn’t a problem as long as it isn’t after 1800ish.

One thing for the Sunday is that both friends are East Coast employees, so it would be cheaper for them to use an EC service for as large a leg of the journey as possible.
I’ve looked at a single Derby to NNG (£2.00 each) and St Pancras to Rochester (£4.90 each using HS1 or £4.05 without). The travel NNG – KGX would be using EC.

Can anyone see any cheaper way that I’ve missed?

A connection between the 1658 arrival from Glasgow Central and the 1707 departure to Derby is not a official one with the minimum connection time at Crewe being 10 minutes.

But it's possible that it can be made

Whenever I've done it it's been a cross platform change at Crewe. If you're running late on the Virgin move towards the front to disembark.

Does it have to be those particular trains? If you're looking for cheapest then Glasgow to Leeds route Via Appleby is probably a good place to start, it's a Northern priced Anytime at £40.30 undiscounted, so about £10 priv, plus LDS-SHF and SHF-NOT (valid via Derby) gives a grand total of about £16.

Or with the east coast thing, presumably the very cheapest would be Glasgow to Edinburgh and Doncaster/Newark/Grantham to Derby on priv, and use EC in between.

It does have to be those trains on the Friday. I mentioned about the 9 minute connection at Crewe, and fingers crossed it makes to avoid an hour or so wait!

Have you looked at any Rail Rovers? You will get 75% discount on those too. A Freedom of the North West may(?) be of benefit. Valid from Lockerbie to Crewe (or is it Warrington on the WCM?). You would get 4 days out of 8 so may get use out of it for your return portion also.

Like I say, it should be fine. The Derby train leaves from the bay platform 4 and whenever I've made this connection the train from Glasgow has always come in on the adjacent platform 5.

If a return journey is not required before Friday 21st then the Freedom of North West Rover does not really save the OP any money.

The best I can work out fitting the OP's itinerary on Friday 14th is:

I cannot find any savings for the Derby - Newark leg on Sunday 16th. For onward travel from London to Rochester, I cannot find any saving to be made if the passenger wishes to travel via HS1 from St Pancras. However if the passenger is happy to use the Southeastern stopping services then the cheapest combination I have found is:

Kentish Town - Welling

Welling - Rochester
Route Not Valid on HS1
Anytime Day Single
£2.20 PRIV

Total: £3.30

The train must therefore call at Welling, which means a change might be required at Dartford. Splitting at Abbey Wood gives the same prices, if times are more suitable going that way. The passenger may start short at St Pancakes Low Level using the Kentish Town ticket.

Then Abbey Wood would be far more suitable as the half-hourly Charing Cross to Gillingham services all stop there (apart from a few in the peak hoiurs).
