VTWC Saver Half fares are still only available as part of a return journey.

A single from Glasgow to Preston is £26.85.

If you're using the sleeper, throw in a zonal based ticket somewhere as part of a split, eg a Merseyrail concessionary pass at the end of your journey, or a Glasgow Roundabout ticket, and it won't matter that sleeper is set down only at Glasgow.

Is this fare offered as a single (i.e. not just when buying an advance in the other direction)

http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?...pert=on&flow=1&multi=0&fare=8&rte=275&tkt=SVH

And if I wanted to get on the sleeper to go from Glasgow to Preston then I would have to get this ticket:

http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?...pert=on&flow=2&multi=0&fare=5&rte=275&tkt=SVH

boarding at Dalmuir would not be too bad as I'd be coming from Glasgow Airport - although I am not sure if my flight times yet.

Can you get off the Sleeper at Preston? It would be about 4.30 am anyway! Interestingly, for a Glasgow departure the only booking options on their website are Watford Jn and Euston; From Inverness London, Preston and Crewe are offered.

Yes the Up Highland Sleeper does indeed set down at Preston at 0436 (or 0444 for the Sunday service) and Crewe at 0538.

The Up Lowland Sleeper, as you mention, picks up at Mortherwell, Carstairs and Carlisle (and obviously the portion from Edinburgh joins) and sets down at Watford Junction at 0643.

Highland Sleeper customers yes, Lowland Sleeper no. It's useful for local connections as 5am is around the time they start up.

Glasgow/Edinburgh area customers for Preston or Crewe should change at Falkirk, Stirling or Dalmuir for the Highland Sleeper, departing these stations at approximately midnight.

Would it not be easier for you to get the train from Paisley Gilmour Street or Paisley St James if you're coming from the airport? That would mean you would come straight into Glasgow Central High Level?

Indeed. I've done it a handful of times when I needed to be in Blackburn or Liverpool early in the day.

...

Nowadays VTWC seem to call it an "Off-Peak Single (Online)".

Also, worth noting they're only available for purchase from Trainline-based booking sites (though in this case the SVH is something of a red herring).

Also available from Assertis sites, of course.;)

And Trainsplit!

These are single tickets which are not available singly (this is consistent with the rail industry policy of referring to complicated fares as being simple)

Not officially, no. The Highland Sleeper is set-down only at Glasgow Central.

I was only going by the previous post which said " straight into Glasgow Central High Level".

OK, it's set down only at Glasgow, whichever station it uses! (And yes, I have been on it when it's gone via Central, so it's not unheard of! ;))

I've alighted the Highland at Queen Street a couple of times. Seemed to be local door only - there's no way you'd be able to board.

It's not cheaper? A DIS railcard discounted CDS GLC-PRE is £26.85, a CDS from Dalmuir is not available, the SOS is £43.90. The SVH fare you have quoted is only available as part of a return journey.

And Trainsplit!

Mea máxima culpa!

Well done Trainsplit :)

Did old Trainsplit (v1) used to offer these too?

I know that Raileasy doesn't. And they are notably absent from WebTIS booking engines. I think at one point in the more distant past only the VTWC site offered them.

Again, the SVH is not available on its own.

Sorry, you didn't make that clear on your first post.

Sorry for any confusion. What threw me here was the fact that there is not also a Off Peak Single offered for roughly £1 cheaper then the Off Peak Return on this route.

Having looked at the fares again. I see it would either be the Off Peak Single in conjunction with an Advance. Or failing that, if unable to commit to a specific train, an Off Peak Day Single or an Anytime Single. Sorted now! :)

Thanks for confirming that.

As it happens I will be travelling up there on an Advance most likely :)

In which case, it's available to you! :cake:

(In this instance, the saving with the SVH isn't that great given the existence of the Off-Peak Day Single/CDS, but for other journeys it can be significant.)

I can't see how much clearer it could have been?

What followed under the line about the saver half was a single from Glasgow to Preston is £xx.xx and a hyperlink. The ticket type was not shown/stated (unless one clicked on the link) so that's what caused the confusion (due to the device I was using to view the forum).

Lets just draw a line under this one. Haven't got the time tonight to post much.
