Glasgow to Hull

I am looking to travel between Glasgow and Hull and have found that the fares for all services are quite expensive with travel not until September.

Can anyone advise on what would be the best route to take and where to split tickets to obtain the best fare?

I have found that most routes are via York or Doncaster with East Coast connecting to Northern Trains, however I was wondering is it possible to go via the WCML and if I was to do this where would be best to change trains keeping connections to a minimum.

I can't advise you on fares but if you want to go via the WCML your best bet would probably be to head for Manchester Piccadilly (TPE offer a few direct services otherwise you will have to change at either Lancaster or Preston) and then from Piccadilly there is a direct TPE service to Hull.

Edit: If you want the best advice then you should also tell us when (date and time) you are travelling and if you have any railcards.

As above, post dates and preferred times, then more refined suggestions will be forth coming

The cheapest direct fare looks to be between £28.50 and £45.00 (one change at York)

The splitting option will probably be :
Glasgow - Manchester (about £15.50 to £19.00)
Manchester - Hull (about £9.50 to £15.00)

Personally, I would travel via York

Sometimes you get better deals specifying via Thorne North.

I often find when looking at Advance fares involving Northern trains for part of the journey it is cheaper to look for Advance fares for the non- Northern part of the journey seperately. Ie try looking for Glasgow to York, then York to Hull individually. Alternatively you may look at the Glasgow to Leeds Route Appleby fares then buy an Advance fare for the TPE section from Leeds to Hull. TPE do some very very cheap Advance fares on most routes, including the Hull route. Can't look at exact fares now as am on my mobile, but that may give someone else an idea.



EDIT - Just had a quick look via my phone at the open tickets and you can save a fortune. Glasgow to Hull Off Peak Return is £93. Glasgow to Leeds Route Appleby Anytime Return is £45. Leeds to Hull Off Peak Return is £20. These two together is £65 Return, valid at any time each way, saving nearly £30 on buying the through ticket.
