Glasgow to Fratton

Wonder if someone could tell me why the route planner I am using is suggesting I use Victoria instead of Waterloo on my return journey?

My times are as follows

Tuesday 9th depart Fratton 0854 to Waterloo then 1130 Euston to Glasgow.

Return on Thursday 11th depart Glasgow 0540 arrive Euston 1012 then it advises me to go to Victoria to get the 1102 to Fratton which arrives 1254.

So why is it telling me to come back from London to Fratton using the slower Victoria route? I could get the 1030 or 1100 from Waterloo and be back quicker.

I think it is to do with minimum connection times set in the Journey planner, specifically for London Underground journeys, the one from Euston to Waterloo, it possibly allocates over 48 minutes to this and therefore will not allow the itinerary of catching the 10:30 or 11am services!

In practice, if the leg from London to Fratton is not reservable(this I don't know), then you should be able to take either of those services you mentioned, but I doubt you would make the 10:30 to be honest as 15mins is not really enough for the Underground journey plus the rush up to the platforms!

It will come down to connection times. I don't have them too hand, but 18 minutes to Waterloo is way too short. 48 minutes Euston to Waterloo seems more reasonable, but is presumably still shorter than they allow. However Euston - Victoria in 50 minutes is obviously permitted.

After the 11:00, the 11:30 from Waterloo doesn't arrive till 12:59, so going via Victoria is, officially, quicker.

This is an example of why a flexible ticket ((super) off-peak return) can be better than reserved trains, because if you can make it across London faster than the default, you can beat their times by quite a margin.

"Allow reduced transfer time across London" on national rail planner puts you on the 11:00 ex Waterloo.

Here are the minimum transfer times, which vary on the time of the day. Waterloo has more time allocated to/from Euston than Victoria. You have to add on the minimum connection times of the station at each end of the transfer to this. All three stations here have a minimum connection time of 15 minutes

EUSTON TO WATERLOO

TRANSFER From 0001 until 0529 30 minutes
TUBE From 0529 until 0659 25 minutes
TUBE From 0700 until 1900 20 minutes
TUBE From 1901 until 2359 25 minutes


EUSTON TO VICTORIA

TRANSFER From 0001 until 0529 19 minutes
TUBE From 0529 until 0659 14 minutes
TUBE From 0700 until 1900 9 minutes
TUBE From 1901 until 2359 14 minutes

Urban Gateline is correct - it will be allcoating 15+15+20 = 50 minutes for Waterloo to Euston, compared to 15+15+9 = 39 minutes for Victoria to Euston

Right here are the official times:

Network Rail Timetable:
Euston - Victoria 54 minutes
Euston - Waterloo 53 minutes

However, in the timetable database:
Euston - 15 minute connection time
Waterloo - 15 minute connection time
Victoria - 15 minute connection time

Euston - Victoria 9 minutes
Euston - Waterloo 20 minutes

Hence - Euston - Victoria = 39 minutes
Euston - Waterloo = 50 minutes

Euston - Waterloo should be more like 10 minutes, and the 11:00 should show up.

But that's what it is.

Inconsistencies galore.

Thanks for all the replies, now I understand it. I shouldn't have any trouble getting to Waterloo for the 11am back to Fratton.

I know this is a slightly older post but as a regularly traveller across London, from Waterloo to Euston, I find the times they allowed to be way to long when looking up the train times. Yet I found the ones to Liverpool Street from Waterloo to be reasonable.

I have got from Euston to Waterloo in under 20 minutes before now and that is off one train on to another at Waterloo. This requires you to run and for the tube to arrive just when you need it.

I would prefer these situations not to occur but London Midland can't seem to run their trains on time, so one has no choice when commuting. It's either that or spend an extra 20 minutes getting home each day, which soon mounts up over the course of one week
