Does anyone here think the cost of a return journey from Glasgow to Braehead is excessive? I've been charged £4.50 by both McGills and First Bus

It doesn't seem unreasonable considering the distance, and I'd suggest it compares fairly well with similar length journeys in the other major urban areas across the UK.

What you were charged is a day ticket. They don't do returns on these buses now.

Compared with Greater Manchester prices, in the context of Stagecoach journeys, it is either a bargain or about the same price. To do the equivalent journey, distance-wise from Greater Manchester, you would be looking at £11.30 for a North West Explorer ticket. That based on catching a 113 from Wigan to Preston or a 125 from Bolton to Preston, then a 61 or 68 into Blackpool.

If you chose to travel 35 miles on a £4.50 Day Rider in Greater Manchester, you could go from Partington to Glossop. This of course needs two changes of bus: the 255 to Piccadilly Gardens, a 216 or 219 to Ashton-under-Lyne, then the 236 or 237 to Glossop.

Looks like a fair price to me. If parking had to be paid for at one end of the journey it would be competitive with driving if travelling alone.

Glasgow to Braehead is around 7miles,so in Manchester it be about £3.50 Single or £4.50 Dayrider (so around the same price),if you open it up to more areas it does look to be a standard price for the distance:

Holmfirth to Huddersfield (just under 7 miles) £3 Single,£4.20 All Day (or much better value £13 Weekly)
Halesowen to Birmingham (about 8 miles) £2.40 Single or £4.60 All Day (£4 after 9:30am)
Coventry to Bedworth (7 Miles) £2.20 Single,£4.10 return (but oddly you can get a local dayrider for £4)
Wallingford to Didcot (6 miles) £3.30 single,£5 Return,£6 All Day

plus in Edinburgh its possible to travel almost double the distance for £1.70 Single,£4 All Day

Don’t worry, from where I live it is 4 miles into Doncaster. First charge £3 single and £4.50 Day Saver (yes you can use this ticket on other First buses, but it is still the cheapest return). Who says fares in PTE areas are cheap?

This is incorrect as this route does not travel through Braehead

Braehead is in the £3.80/day Plusbus zone when combined with a qualifying rail journey (unfortunately this does not seem to include the cheapest, smartcard only, day returns).

Actually yes they do, Stagecoach Western runs the X34 and X36 to Braehead. Stagecoach Fife also runs the X24. I'd have a look at the Stagecoach timetables.

The comparison was based on a journey from Glasgow to Braehead in Ayrshire. Glasgow to intu Braehead at a £4.50 Day Rider rate for five miles is more akin to using Stagecoach Manchester's Day Rider on the 216 from Ashton-under-Lyne to Manchester [Piccadilly Gardens]. Or the X50/250 to the intu Trafford Centre from Piccadilly Gardens.

Worth noting McGills singles are dear , . Though you do get a faster bus along the M8 .

With bus pass 77 is best option with First .Thugh First dont operate any expresses from Braehead .

From the city centre to braehead the journey times on the 77 are reasonable to begin with
