You can then enter the dates and times you want to travel.

It depends on what dates you want to make the journey over - for a day return, you'd want to split it such as to get it all on Day Return tickets, obviously. And if you are happy to stick to Virgin Trains, you'll want to split such as to include as many "Virgin Trains only" tickets as possible.

However, as stated, www.trainsplit.com is probably the easiest way of finding out optimal splits for your specific journey requirements.

If you don't mind a longer journey, you can go via Manchester and Crewe. Tack on an hour or so though!

Will look that up. There is a day return to Preston but its only valid from the 9.40 service from Glasgow

The advances between Glasgow to Birmingham seem quite expensive or sell out fast .

I certainly know from previous experience that Advances between Glasgow and Crewe are regularly available at the lowest tier that's sold (V2X), even only a few weeks before travel, but obviously this is limited to those trains which are legitimately less busy.
