Glasgow Subway goes contactless

Small bit of good news re. Glasgow local transport - a reminder that as of this morning, March 16th, Glasgow Subway finally accepts contactless payment. Google + Apple Pay, Mastercard and Visa only, no Amex.

Simply use your Visa or Mastercard (including Apple and Google mobile wallets) when entering and exiting the Subway. You must use the same card or device every time your tap in/out of the Subway, or you may pay more than the prices above.

Further good news on the assumption it is formally approved. All of these improvements including contactless are relatively very late compared to other cities.

Glasgow subway plans to extend weekend opening hours

The change would see the network open three-and-a-half hours earlier and close five hours later on a Sunday.

“Opening hours for the Glasgow subway could be extended on weekends next year.
On Friday, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) will vote on keeping the underground running an hour later until 00:30 on Fridays and Saturdays.
The motion would also see the subway open from 06:30 until 23:30 on a Sunday, instead of its current hours from 10:00 to 18:12.
SPT said the change would come in once modernisation of the subway is complete in 2027, which includes driverless trains and platform screen doors.
Councillor Stephen Dornan, SPT chair, said: "We are all aware that there is a real ask from subway users for extended subway operating hours, especially on a Sunday, and it has long been a commitment of SPT to revise the operating hours once subway modernisation is fully complete.
"However, there are still a number of issues we need to consider including future maintenance requirements of the system and future staffing which we need to consider alongside longer operating hours."

I tried to use contactless on my phone at the ticket gates today, but Google Pay refused to use my default card and instead wanted to try to use the balance on my Tyne & Wear Metro Pop card. I appreciate I'm very much an edge case here!

Absolutely. I was very surprised that Contactless payments at the gates weren't actually in use until I happened to be in Glasgow back in March and just coincidently happened to be there when they had just switched the system on.

It makes a world of difference by not having to purchase a ticket in advance.
