Glasgow Stations - new boarding system for Games

Scotrail have today initiated a 'one-way system' at Argyle Street and Glasgow Central Low Level stations to accommodate extra passenger loadings for the Commonwealth Games.

Eastbound passengers can only board at Argyle Street, westbound passengers can only board at Glasgow Central.

My question is, is this system enforceable? For example what about a passenger who bought an annual season from Glasgow Central to Cambuslang before the system was announced - do they still have the right to travel from Glasgow Central?

I understand Scotrail will have no option but to accommodate disabled passengers at these stations regardless of destination, but can they be considered to have reduced accessibility for disabled persons by also closing the main station entrance at Argyle Street and forcing anyone travelling from there to take a convoluted route into the station?

Provided the route is still accessible, I don't see a problem with closing one entrance. In the event that the prescribed route is not accessible to those with reduced mobility, they would be need to accommodate such people either by means of assistance of safe passage or through special routeings.

I see no reason why the system wouldn't be enforceable - it is common to implement restrictions such as one way systems for large events.

As they are both island platforms, I suspect there is nothing stopping you going eastbound from Central if you really want to. They are probably just trying to encourage the loads to be split more evenly between the two stations.

Not familiar with the layout in Glasgow, but couldn't eastbound trains just skip Central and westbound trains skip Argyll St.?

The OP only mentions boarding, not alighing - but your suggestion would make sense as a crowd control measure. That would mean barriers could be installed along one side of the island platform for further safety assurances.

OK, I've read it and it says that inbound passengers can alight at both stations. My comment was a suggestion that not stopping at stations would actually prevent any unwanted boarding at the wrong stations. Easy to implement and totally effective, Scotrail have chosen not to do that for some reason, - maybe someone here with local knowledge could explain why they may have taken such a decision.

I can think of a number of reasons, but the main one would be that Argyle St could not handle the eastbound passenger traffic for Central Low Level as well as its own during peak periods. As has already been pointed out, both are (quite narrow) island platforms.

You can do what I am doing, catch the Westbound service to Anderston and then catch the Eastbound service. You have more chance of getting a seat this way

The way ScotRail have set it up is a pain in the backside. I've got a season from Bridgeton to Glasgow Central.

I can board at Bridgeton and get off a Central via a one way system, but going back to Bridgeton, I have to use the rear Argyle Street entrance, as the main entrance is closed.

All Eastbound journeys have to board at Argyle Street, but can alight at Central. All Westbound journeys can alight and board at Central.

And it certainly is enforceable, I tried to go up the usual way I go, which is up the stairs and along the long corridor, but instead got put to the far stairs and out via Argyle Street underneath the high level tracks.

Probably just as quick walking along to Anderston and jumping on there!
