Won't this delay the introduction of 8-car trains? I assume they can't uncover the platform extensions until the concourse has been extended towards George Square.

I thought the maximum was 7-car, that is why 3-car 385s were ordered as well as 4-car and I thought 5+2 HSTs were to operate to Inverness and Aberdeen not 6+2.

The platforms were extended to fit 8-car, and then in-filled with polystyrene blocks to only fit 7-car and still have space for the ticket barrier and waiting prior to the extension of the station building. The peak Edinburgh–Glasgow services will eventually be eight-car services.

It'll be 8 cars eventually but 7 cars first of all. the 4 car 385s will be dedicated to the E&G, the 3 cars for everywhere else.

Things are happening again: as posted on the Scottish Electrification thread (thanks snowball for the alert).

Next phase of Glasgow Queen Street station redevelopment gets underway

Work will begin on the next phase of redevelopment of Glasgow’s Queen Street station on Sunday 6th August.

Although customer journeys should not in general be disrupted by the work, those using the station and the surrounding roads will see some changes to walking routes and entrances/exits. This will include changes to the road network, bus stops and services, and taxi rank.

To enable the work to be carried out safely and efficiently, the station ticket office will move to the former Vale pub on Dundas Street and the George Square entrance to the station will close. Additionally, hoardings will be erected on Dundas Street and West George Street where bus stops will be relocated and the taxi rank will close.

Rodger Querns, Network Rail programme director for Queen Street redevelopment said:

“Securing the powers provided by the Transport and Works Scotland (TAWS) Act process has enabled us to take forward the next phase of the redevelopment of Queen Street station.

“We are fully committed to carrying out these enhancements as quickly as possible and with the minimum of inconvenience for the city. We thank station users for their patience and co-operation as we deliver this important investment in their station.”

Further information on changes to the surrounding roads and transport networks can be found at http://www.egip.info/projects/glasgow-queen-street-–-station-redevelopment-major-works

The redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street station is part of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) – a Scottish Government investment in the railway infrastructure across central Scotland being delivered by Network Rail.

Good news, although there has been so so many chops and changes of late I am confused as to what work will actually be done in this phase?

The station will be rebuilt in its entirety. The Buchanan Galleries extension/carpark to the east won't be built, and so instead NR are building a fairly temporary operations depot there instead. One positive thing is that there will be a handful of fairly permanent looking retail units built on the eastern side where the toilets currently are. Since the car park won't have been built over, there will still be an eastern entrance into it. The wide corridor from this entrance to the main concourse will have retail units on either side. In the original plans, this was also where the retail units were going to be but the configuration was quite different because of the BG work. With the combination of these shops and the new operations depot, I really can't see how the old BG plans could be resurrected easily at all. I think it would require a total re-think, even just for the sake of constructing what was originally planned. Since the site was going to be used for a massive multi-storey car park I don't honestly think that's a bad thing in the long term. If there will be retail units for travellers, then it's not a bad thing for this to drag out long enough for someone to realise that multi-storey car parks are a monumentally stupid investment for the 21st century.

The one good thing about the Buchanan Galleries extension plan was the new entrance on Cathedral Street which would have provided passengers with a covered walkway/escalator between Cathedral Street and the station concourse.

Anyway, here's a drawing of the proposed new operations building on the site of the existing car park, which will be clad in Jura limestone so is definitely permanent:

I dont like the relocation of the toilets, their positioning was good however the fact it will now look like a building site not a bomb site is great and with no external/3rd parties in the loop now the contractor can get on with it and maybe finish early.

Good post there. Apologies as this is probably not much use to Blindtraveller who asked for the clarification, but Railscot has a photo today of the progress of the current phase of work in the car park area. This shows some new building work next to the covered walkway leading to platform 9 (low level) while the 1970s building next to platform 7 which was the catering depot or whatever is being demolished.

No, it's unaffected. As far as I can judge, the building work so far is just north of the position of the low level station. The North Hanover St entrance is still in use but the old drop off point and car park area is closed off - has been for some time now.

Thanks again.
Good to know as if I go to Glasgow I often use a 334 via Bathgate for what I consider a nicer experience, guaranteed power socket ann if quiet a row of 3 to myself.

That's funny, I do exactly the same for the same reason.

Is platform 1 being extended full length as it doesn't look like it from video?

Not full length but it's being extended. The Ops block will be getting demolished.

Haha small world, but the end to end A to B experience is a hidden gem that nost people see takes 20 mins longer and pile like sheep onto the gastly 170 to High level!
Ultimatly its the same WiFi and as long as you remember to take your coffee its fine you can work, doze or fiddle with your phone for 1h10.

It's being extended to take a 4 car set.

This is the layout of the new concourse. It's still an older plan which includes the Buchanan Galleries stuff but the station is basically unchanged.

Yeah , A to B can be quiet even in the peaks , not a huge fan of the 334s but rather a quiet train . Via Shotts is great too .

I see things have moved on a bit since my wee video above. RailScot have a photo taken yesterday and the old catering trolley base has nearly gone now. I expect that the wall at the platform 7 end will have to stay for a bit as it extends round the lifts.

Just up and down

No, Network Rail have said that passenger access including the lifts will be available throughout the alterations. I was rather hoping they would be renewed at some point.

EDIT: Couldn't find the link but I have now:
http://www.egip.info/projects/glasgow-queen-street-–-station-redevelopment-major-works

...Safe walking routes to station and platforms will be maintained at all times.

Passengers should be aware that some platforms may be narrower than they are used to during some phases of work.

The station Travel Office will be relocated for the duration of the construction works to a new location on lower Dundas Street which will be operational from Sunday 6 August until early 2020

The existing station entrance from/to Queen Street/George Square will be closed from August. Access to the station will be maintained via Dundas Street and North Hanover Street entrances.

Accessible entry/exit to the station will be maintained for those with restricted mobility via the existing station arrangements. Lift access to the low level station will be maintained.

Impact on train services during the construction work will be minimal. Any short term closures/changes will be communicated in advance.

Cycle parking facilities will be maintained throughout the works.

Given the age of the lifts at GLQ I would think sometime towards the end of the remoddling they will be heavily refurbished or replaced.
