Glasgow-Paisley 3 tracking - How will it work

Now that a third track has been restored between the approaches to Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street, how will it work in practice ?

I presume that it will be used for Glasgow bound non-stop services in the morning peak and Paisley bound non-stop services in the evening week.

How will be be used during the rest of the day ? Alternating 15 mins one way then the other ?, mainly for freight ? hardly used much ? or what ? I have no idea.

I don't know, but the remodelling map at my depot states that no ScotRail services will be using the new track until at least 2014.

It's obviously only 3/4 months from completion and is very much a "headline" project - can you imagine the political outcry and fallout for the SNP and Transport Scotland if it were to be completed and then not used for the best part of two years!
That said, as a regular user of the Ayrshire services I see demand falling particularly at "Full Fare" times.

Even if First ScotRail never used it at all, its still not an embaresment, as the ammount of coal traffic which uses the line would make good use of this, freeing up paths for ScotRail so win-win kind of. Although for the extra cost, 4 tracking the line should have been done, and lack of investment in government projects can sometimes come back to bite. (Newton)

I think that re-instating four tracks was out of the question due to tighter restrictions on the distance between lines, which is why we now have the three tracks in place.
