On Friday 19th September I intend to catch the last Avanti service from the South to Glasgow Central arriving just after midnight. The next train I'm catching is the 04.26 Avanti service to Carlisle which uses the Newton South Connecting line. My dilemma is what to do for 4 hours on a Friday night in Glasgow. Any ideas? I am aware it is a mad trip to do one of my last lines left in Britain and is risky.

Look on the bright side, if you are travelling on Avanti your train up will be so late that you won’t actually end up needing to fill as many as four hours.
If you are a house and dance music aficionado the celebrated Sub Club is one block down the road from Central Station and open til 3am, although the customers may have consumed substances more potent (and less legal) than even the diesel used in a class 158.
Otherwise there are a number of casinos open overnight, but you will have to buy membership.
While the station is a very fine one, it’s immediate vicinity is not a nice place to be at night. In particular, do not go towards the McDonald’s at the junction of Argyle, Union and Jamaica Streets- “the Four Corners”- this is a notoriously rough spot.

Some night buses operate one way though, but maybe the OP could do a return trip on the 900 Glasgow - Edinburgh which does operate through the night

Another thing the OP could do is go to Glasgow Airport, should be a safter place to spend a couple of hours overnight, the 500 has premium fares though but operates 24 hours, however its every 60 minutes overnight, with a 20 minute journey time.
Would it not be less painful to take an earlier train and book a hotel. Somewhere to rest before the early start, but also a chance to get some sleep after.

Thank you for all your replies. I've done a little research. After arriving at Glasgow Central at 00.07 I'm going to catch the 01.00 bus to Edinburgh Airport and then the 02.10 bus back to Glasgow. Its a bit of a tight connection at the Airport of 5 minutes but should be OK. This is the 900 bus.

I am fairly sure that the bus you go out on will be the same bus you return on, so probably no issue with a connection- but don’t take my word for it!!
The bus carries on to Edinburgh so think I will have to change bus. On balance though I'd rather risk a tight connection then staying in Glasgow for 4 hours or going to Glasgow Airport for ages. If I miss it, it wouldn't be the end of the world.
I did my trip as planned to Glasgow on Friday night with the trains approximately on time. Many thanks Statto for the tip of the 900 bus. I caught this to Edinburgh Airport. The return was slightly late which meant an easy connection at the Airport and less time hanging around in Glasgow. Fortunately the train did the Newton South Connecting line. Overall a very successful trip. I'm glad though I didn't have to hang around overnight in Glasgow for four hours.
