£40m contract awarded for Glagow to Cumbernauld electrification, part of the EGIP project:

Carillion wins £40m Cumbernauld electrification contract

Network Rail has today (January 30) announced that Carillion has won the contract to deliver the electrification of the Cumbernauld-Glasgow Queen Street line.

The £40m contract will see over 50km of railway electrified, as part of a wider £80m investment in the line between Cumbernauld and Scotland’s largest city.

As well as the main works, Carillion will also be lengthening the Cumbernauld station platforms and constructing a turnback facility at Springburn.

The project marks the first phase of electrification on the Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP), and the scheme will be delivered in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, said: “This project further underlines Scotland’s continued commitment to electrifying our rail network.

“This project will create jobs and modernise rail services to Cumbernauld as well as mark the beginning of a transformation of services across the central belt as we begin to deliver the wider EGIP project, enhancing rail travel between the country’s two biggest cities.

“These works will also be an opportunity to continue to develop our new alliancing approach to infrastructure projects – working more closely with contractors, train operators and other stakeholders to deliver in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible for passengers.”

Transport Minister Keith Brown said: “The Scottish Government’s funding of the electrification of the Cumbernauld line, and our £5billion package of investment over the coming years, demonstrates our ongoing commitment to EGIP and to the Scottish rail network.

“This announcement is a major step forward in the delivery of EGIP.

“As well as the obvious benefits of having this in place in time for the Commonwealth Games, rail passengers here will feel the benefits for many years to come with better reliability and an improved service on the railways.”

Steve Montgomery, managing director of ScotRail, added: “We welcome the electrification which introduces more opportunities for direct journeys from Cumbernauld to other parts of Glasgow rather than just Queen Street.”

The £650m EGIP project will cut journey times on Scotland’s flagship route between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley.

The programme will see longer electric trains introduced, along with improved reliability and increased capacity for passengers on the line.

The project will cut around 10 minutes from journey times between Scotland’s two major cities. It will also transform Glasgow’s Queen Street station into a world-class integrated transport hub and deliver the Edinburgh Gateway Station, connecting services to the tram network and Edinburgh Airport.

Interesting, cheers.

No mention of whether this will include the Cumbernauld - Falkirk Grahamston line (and on to Polmont) though.

EDIT:

Nevermind, I got mixed up between miles and kilometres.

It comes out about right for the previous examples of electrification costs we have.

It is a bit confusing - the press release says:
Steve Montgomery, managing director of ScotRail, added: “We welcome the electrification which introduces more opportunities for direct journeys from Cumbernauld to other parts of Glasgow rather than just Queen Street.”

If they don't continue to Falkirk Grahamston, half the services through Cumbernauld will have to be diesel.

Do Transport Scotland have the orders in for all the extra AC stock they will need?

Aaah Cumbernauld, is that not where one of the main offices is based for the lovely taxman?

Not sure although I suspect we will be seeing the class 314's retained for a while longer

Procure another batch of 380s to replace the 314s and provide for new electrics? Great that there's more wires going up.

Isn't this more about sorting out the stages of knitting to reach the freight hub at Grangemouth than electification of passenger services to Cumbernauld?

£/Passenger would be better spent electriftying from the Larbert Triangle to Dunblane/Alloa to meet up with EGIP.

Isn't this to do with ScotRail wanting to add Cumbernauld to the North Clyde Line services, via a chord at Garngad? Mentioned years ago but it's taken them this long to get around to it.

If the link to Grahamston isn't being electrified (yet) then will this mean the Cumbernauld - Grahamston service is run as an extension of the Motherwell - Cumbernauld service?

I don't know about any tax offices there, but (similar New Town for the post-war Glasgow overspill) East Kilbride has a large one.

I'm guessing this is what the "direct journeys from Cumbernauld to other parts of Glasgow rather than just Queen Street" relates to (which would potentially free up space at Queen Street (high level)

Yes the idea is to re-route Cumbernauld services away from Queen St High level onto the electrified low level line. However, the Garngad Chord isn't being taken forward because of the cost, so trains will have to reverse at Springburn.

So, in summary Glasgow QS [GLQ] will lose direct services to Falkirk Grahamston [FKG], Cumbernauld to GLQ journeys will be extended due to reversal at Springburn [SPR] & longer run via High Street [---] to the low level, and SPR, Stepps [SPS], & Gartcosh [---] will also lose direct services to FKG.

Not a lot of progress. methinks?

The current journey time from Springburn to Cumbernauld is 19 mins with trains running every 30 mins.

On that basis by extending the existing Springburn service, ScotRail will only require an additional 2 units. If the journey time with AC stock is a bit quicker and the turnaround time at Cumbernauld is slick, they may only actually need one extra unit.

How many people travelling from Falkirk to Glasgow use Grahamston though (when the "High" trains are much faster and much more frequent)?

A Motherwell - Falkirk service may be more beneficial.

Me, occasionally, for a change of scenery! The two Falkirk stations are just far enough apart for it to make a difference if you are walking to catch a train, but that apart, it would rarely be worthwhile travelling right through from Grahamston.

On the other hand, the residents of Cumbernauld should be used to reversals, considering that all their trains to Queen Street did that prior to the opening of the Cowlairs Curve in the 1990s!

Yep thats pretty much it. Didn't quite sound like that with SNP spin did it?

With Glasgow Queen Street HL to Cumbernauld currently taking 27 mins, I suspect the whole service utilises 3 DMU sets, taking into account layover times.

With electrification requiring just 2 (or possibly even 1) extra EMU sets, that is quite a cost saving over a period of time.

Additionally 2 inbound and 2 outbound paths are freed in Queen Street every hour.

It all adds up.

No it wont, they haven't any plans to do it before the e&g is finished which means there will be no diversionary routes.

Despite the fact all the bridges between Cumbernauld and Grahamston were rebuilt last year. Very confused.......

This scheme will electrify the northern section of the Gartosh triangle. This must then leave a very small distance (about 1 mile ?) unelectrified between there and the current end of electrification at Gartsherrie terminal north of Coatbridge.

Are there any plans to join the two up ?

I would assume it includes Garnqueen North Jnc - Coatbridge FLT.

The press release states over 50 km (31 miles), and Springburn - Cumbernauld is only 12 1/4 miles (24 1/2 in reality as it is double track) so there is more than simply electrifying Springburn - Cumbernauld, though it doesn't state what.

Contract for bridges was signed before they realised they could no longer afford the original plans. Just as all the bridges to dunblane and alloa have also been done. Makes it ready for future electrification though.

Are the Kippenross Tunnel & the Caledonian Footbridge at Dunblane now knitting ready?

What will happen to the daily "commuter" service between Fife & Glasgow Queen Street?

No work has been done on Kippencross tunnel or the footbridge as far as I am aware, all Bridges to Stirling and Alloa have been moved/rebuilt accordingly though.

As for your second question, it could run as a deisel service or may be linked at perhaps polmont or Linlithgow with a diesel running from Dunblane or Alloa? :-?

Only since the closure of Buchanan St of course :P

No work has been done on Kippencross tunnel or the footbridge as far as I am aware, all Bridges to Stirling and Alloa have been moved/rebuilt accordingly though.

Nuttall have had an agreed workscope increase to their original EGIP structures contract and all bridges from Larbert Junction to Dunblane and Alloa are due to be completed in 2013. Even after the Transport Scotland 4th July 2012 EGIP budget cut announcement, Network Rail continued to progress the structures enablement plans on this section.
Currently the new B9124 Carseview (Cowie) bridge is under construction. The bridge at Gallamuir Farm (Cowie) is to be done this year (the B9124 Gallamuir Road bridge has just reopened) as is the unclassfied Mill of Keir bridge (just south of Kippenross Tunnel). The Mill of Keir works require a temporary bridge to be put in place as there is no alternative route.

Assessment and investigation works are underway to determine the solutions for abandonment of Cornton Level Crossing (as part of the new Kildean to Stirling Uni road in the being assembled local plan), replacement of Shore Street bridge (North end of Stirling Station), raising and realignment of Causewayhead Road bridge (to satisfy Council demands to widen the road and stop flooding) and proposals for Kippenross Tunnel (which is actually classed as an underbridge as it was built as a cutting with a cover placed over).
Cornton Crossing and Causewayhead Road bridge are required to be dealt with as these provide the alternative route when the M9 is closed from Keir Roundabout to Craigforth - Causewayhead bridge has only 14'3" clearance and is constantly being struck and once the wires DO go up there would be a height restriction at Cornton Crossing as the motorway head clearance height of 16'6" would not be met at both places.
Kippenross Tunnel doesn't meet the minimum clearance for OHLE and you can't track lower due to the incline to Dunblane as well as there being a river bridge at either end of the tunnel. There are also concerns about the integrity of the tunnel and continuous drainage problems despite works having been carried out in recent years - most recently closed due to these problems for a few hours on 23.12.2012.

Track lowering is to be carried out at Stirling Road bridge, Dunblane and Kerse Road, Stirling later this year during the closures for the Stirling Remodeling.

No work has been carried out on any bridges in the Stirling area that only need protection or parapet height alterations including Dunblane Station footbridge.

Network Rail are having problems with two listed building planning applications
- one for altering the Stirling Station to allow the OHLE to go up and the other for the removal of the semaphore signalling / alterations to Stirling Middle Signal Box that are required for the Remodeling.

Currently underway are a package of works called Stirling North to Dunblane Minor Improvements which are mainly signalling and track circuit improvements (the existing circuits are not compatible with OHLE).

Another reason for Transport Scotland now committing to electrifying the Dunblane triangle by 2019 is the possibility of cash from the DfT with regards to the re-run of the WCML franchise and the introduction of Anglo/Stirling electric services which could allow the earlier reach of the wires to Stirling.

The Stirling area new stabling depot will not be constructed at Polmaise due to the changing of the EGIP EMUs to 4cars (was 3cars) - the site isn't big enough and there is the requirement for future stabling capacity expansion to hold long distance Anglo/Scottish trains. NR are trying to find a suitable new location.

Rather than write in detail about these items I would refer you to a thread on another forum that I have contributed to where things Scottish are discussed to great lengths:
